“BE PROACTIVE, BE PREPARED”

 After two months of public meetings and research, the Crisis Communications Task Force presented its initial draft of recommendations on how best to communicate with Bay Village residents in an emergency situation. At the most recent meeting, held March 25, the committee presented a plan that focused on three impact areas: communicating with vulnerable and at-risk populations; making better use of existing programs and resources; and using tactics that are flexible and scalable for the scope of the emergency.

 Committee members are currently revising the draft of recommendations to reflect the suggestions brought forward at the last meeting. A revised draft will be presented at the April 8 Task Force meeting.

 The next emergency situation can happen at any time. Bay Village residents are asked to be proactive and be prepared by taking advantage of the free communication and emergency services listed below:

  • Sign up for the Nixle program, a system that sends out emergency announcements and information to subscribers via text and email. The program is free and operated well during Hurricane Sandy. But less than 20% of Bay residents are subscribed.  It takes less than a minute, and you do not need to provide your name, your age or even your street address. To enroll, please visit www.cityofbayvillage.com and click on the Safety Services tab.

  • Register for the Mayor’s free e-mail newsletter, which is emailed out when needed to all subscribers. To sign up go to: www.cityofbayvillage.com and click on Email Alerts in the top right corner of the site.

  • Enroll in the Residential Lockbox Program by contacting the Bay Village Fire Department. The cost is minimal for residents ($25), and it provides the Fire and Police Departments access to enrollees’ homes in the event that they need to gain emergency entry.  The Bay Village Fire Department can be reached by calling 440-871-1214.

  • Enroll in the Bay Village Police & Fire Department’s Community Care Monitor program, in which the departments use automated calls to check in on enrollees. If the phone is not answered, the police check on that resident. For more information, contact the Bay Village Police Department at 440-871-1234.
