Westlake Officer Hit by Fourth of July Driver

A Westlake Police Dept.  auxiliary officer directing traffic at the Clague Park fireworks was hit by a drunk driver on July 4 at 10:47PM. He was posted at Clague Rd. and Belmont Dr. when the 47-year-old Westlake woman disobeyed his signal to stop. She was stopped nearby and arrested for OVI and Failure to Comply With a Police Order. She gave a .162 breath sample at WPD and admitted she did not stop because she did not want to get stuck in post-fireworks traffic. The auxiliary officer received bruises and scrapes on his left hand. The City Prosecutor will review the matter for a possible Vehicular Assault Charge.

A 43-year-old Westlake man was arrested for Domestic Violence on July 7 after the suspect tried to get a neighbor to cash a check on the suspect’s mother’s account. The DV incident took place the previous day, where he had grabbed his 62-year-old mother’s wrist after an argument. He also threatened to injure his younger brother and his mother’s boyfriend if his mother called police on July 6.


A Halls Carriage Path woman suspects house sitters have made off with her 2003 Pontiac minivan sometime since June of 2012. She has been overseas and returned home on June 23 to find her home trashed and the van gone. The victim reported the matter on June 30; the suspects have reportedly left Ohio.

A $3000 Kalkhoff Pedeletric bike (brown-silver) was stolen from in front of a Detroit Rd. store on June 25. It was not locked. The owner did some amateur detective work and found it on a resale website; the listing has since been removed. The owner reported the theft on July 1. Reportedly, it is the only one of its kind in Ohio and cannot be operated without the charger.

A Willow Run man has had a run of trouble with fraudsters impersonating him. Someone opened an online account with the Social Security Administration; he found out about this on July 2. In 2012, a false tax return was filed in his name with the IRS. Both federal agencies investigated those matters and closed the phony accounts.

An employee’s cellphone was stolen from a Main St. store on July 2 at 1:33PM by a male suspect. The victim followed him to a parked car; the suspect got into it, and then ran off when private security officers approached.  The vehicle’s owner arrived on scene (43-year-old Lorain woman); she denied any involvement despite being seen with the male suspect earlier. She refused to ID herself and began shouting, then tried to bite one of the arresting officers while being placed in the cruiser. She also threatened to spit on one of the officers. She was arrested for Obstructing Official Business and Disorderly Conduct

A 25-year-old Columbia Station man was arrested for Assault after a July 2 incident with his 22-year-old girlfriend at her Detroit Rd. apartment. They had argued over the woman’s recent medical issue; the suspect then punched her in the face, pushed her down, and left at 10:11PM. He was arrested at his Columbia Station home.

An Orchard Way woman is missing jewelry with a min. value of $4900. A diamond pendant necklace disappeared sometime May 14-June 6. On June 27, a pair of silver earrings could not be found. She suspects employees of her cleaning service.

A cab driver reported that an intoxicated passenger had puked in his vehicle and on herself on July 3 at 3:09AM. The 39-year-old North Ridgeville woman was arrested for DCI on Main St.

An employee of a Main St. reported her $250 cellphone stolen off the counter on July 3. Store surveillance captured the July 2 theft by these suspects: #1–Black female, heavy set, wearing all white or grey, curly dreadlock-style hairdo with a bag draped across her body, and a straight nose ring.

#2–Black female, wearing light colored flannel type shirt, dark pants, dark jacket (possible a North face) also with a bag draped around her body. Note that these suspects are not the same as the July 2 suspects in a similar offense.

A 66-year-old Bay Village man left Giant Eagle on Detroit Rd. without paying for 2 packages of fish. He was stopped nearby and found to have also stolen items from Marc’s, Aldi’s, and Speedway (total value $44.00). He was arrested for 4 counts of RSP and Possession of Criminal Tools (the leather bag he hid the items in).

A 20-year-old Westlake man learned the folly of throwing firecrackers out of his vehicle in front of a police car at Center Ridge and Dover Center Rds. on July 4 at 1:10AM. He was cited for Noise Disturbance; an illegal knife and the rest of his boom-booms were confiscated.

An intoxicated 42-year-old Cleveland man made himself unwelcome by pounding on doors and shouting at his girlfriend’s Detroit Rd. apartment when she would not let him in. This being at 1:56AM on July 4, it was bound to annoy the caller who reported it. The blotto beau was arrested for DCI.

A 40-year-old Westlake man was caught putting his garbage into a nearby apartment house’s dumpster on July 4 at 5:33PM. When confronted by the 62-year-old male manager, the suspect drove off, striking the manager with his 2006 Kia Sedona. The manager was transported to St. John Medical Center for treatment of a possible broken arm and dislocated shoulder. The suspect was arrested for Trespass, Illegal Dumping, and Hit Skip.
