Lakewood Hospital Foundation hosted the 8th annual Starry Night fundraiser on Friday, August 2, under the stars on Belle Avenue at Detroit Road. Recognized as one of the west side’s premier events of the summer, the festivities were held outside on Lakewood Hospital’s grounds under large, whimsically decorated tents.
Guests dined on a variety of gourmet cuisine offerings prepared by Aramark, food and beverage provider at Cleveland Clinic. The impressive menu included Asian fusion, California spa cuisine, Middle Eastern mezze and dessert items such as cheesecake lollipop, caramelized peach and berry tart and mini cupcakes. A sno-cone cordial bar featuring flavors such as limoncello and margarita was a hit.Lakewood’s own Vance Music Studios (VMS) assembled a lively five-piece jazz combo for this year’s event and Monica Robbins, Senior Health Correspondent for WKYC-TV 3 served as Mistress of Ceremonies.
Proceeds from Starry Night benefit the Diabetes Assistance Initiative (DAI), a program of the Lakewood Hospital Diabetes and Endocrine Center that provides funds for diabetes testing supplies, medications and education to individuals who are unable to afford this life-saving support. The Diabetes Assistance Initiative (DAI) is funded solely through philanthropic support such as that generated from Starry Night and is the only offering of its kind in Northeast Ohio. Since the DAI program’s inception on March 2009, over $600,000.00 has been provided to over 400 people in vouchers and scholarships.
Highlights of the evening included a palm reader, a “giving tree” full of gift cards, a corks & cash wine raffle, “lights for lancets” where guests purchased “blinkee” rings with the funds from the sales going to someone struggling to afford this necessary diabetes testing equipment. By the end of the evening, “blinkee” rings lit up the tents. A silent auction was held that included everything from a puppy slated to be born in early-October to original works of art by members of Fairview, Lakewood and Lutheran Hospitals.
