Sing & Swing Brings Smiles at St. Mary of the Woods

DSC_1071Sing and Swing has been offering the Music Together(R) program in the greater Cleveland Area since 2008.

They  have locations on the east and west sides of town, and St. Mary of the Woods in Avon is the newest location. They plan to offer our first intergenerational classes on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 9:45-10:30 a.m. starting with the winter session in January. Anne Howard will be the teacher. Robin Hannah is the coordinator for St. Mary’s. Jenny Woda is the co-director of Sing and Swing, LLC. You can read more about Sing and Swing on our website: www.singandswingneo.org.

The Music Together curriculum is an early childhood music and movement class for children 0-5 with the grown ups who love them. Music Together classes are based on the recognition that all children are musical. All children can learn to sing in tune, keep a beat, and participate with confidence in the music of our culture, provided that their early environment supports such learning. By emphasizing actual music experiences, rather than concepts about music, Music Together introduces children to the pleasures of making music instead of passively receiving it from CDs or TV.

Central to the Music Together approach is that young children learn best from the powerful role model of parents/caregivers who are actively making music. The program brings families together by providing a rich musical environment in the classroom and by facilitating family participation in spontaneous musical activity at home within the context of daily life.

Music Together Intergenerational classes expand our community music making to include our elders. We have participated in two demos at St. Mary’s and have had wonderful feedback from the residents who attended. I am sure Robin can share some wonderful stories.

“We are very excited about offering these classes at St. Mary’s. Thank you for helping us get the word out about the program.
