Bay Village Police: Man Scammed for 6 Grand

On 12/21/2013, at 1230 hrs, a resident in the 24000 block of Wolf Rd. reported he had been the victim of a scam.  A male with a Jamaican accent had called the victim telling him he had won the Publishers Clearing House Prize, but needed to pay the taxes before he could collect his winnings.  The victim proceeded to purchase between $6,000 and $7,000 in Green Dot cards to pay the taxes.  The last time he spoke with the scammers, the male told the victim he had paid the taxes, but needed to go through a broker to collect his winnings.  The scammer told the victim he would put him in touch with a broker for $50,000, at which point the victim realized he had been scammed, and hung up.  Police want to remind residents to be very cautious of telephone and internet scams.

 

On 12/21/2013, at 2334 hrs, a BVPD officer stopped a vehicle on Wolf Rd. at Glen Park for a traffic violation.  After speaking with the 47 yoa male driver, the officer suspected the driver had been drinking.  Field sobriety tests were administered, and as result, the driver was arrested.  He will face OVI charges at RRMC.

 

On 12/19/2013, at 2354 hrs, a Bassett Rd. resident called to report a suspicious white van drove slowly past his house twice.  The van then stopped in front of a neighbor’s house, and the driver walked down the driveway.  A short time later the van left southbound on Bassett Rd.  Police located the van and spoke with the driver.  Everything checked okay, the driver worked for a company that decorated yards for birthdays, and he was at client’s house setting up.

 

On 12/19/2013, at 1925 hrs, a resident in the 300 block of Bradley Rd. reported a UPS package that he had received had been opened while it was on his front porch.  Some of the contents were stolen after it had been delivered.  Police are looking into the matter.

 

On 12/19/2013, at 0119 hrs, a BVPD officer stopped a vehicle on Bradley Rd. near the rail road tracks for a traffic violation.  After speaking with the 45 yoa male driver, the officer suspected the driver had been drinking.  Field sobriety tests were administered, and as result, the driver was arrested for OVI.  He will face charges at RRMC.

 

On 12/18/2013, at 0037 hrs, a resident in the 28000 block of West Oviatt reported someone had attempted to steal her neighbor’s Nativity scene.  When police arrived they located a group of four adults (two males and two females) standing on the sidewalk in the area.  Officer’s spoke with the group, all of whom denied being in anyone’s yard.  They claimed they were getting ready to leave a friend’s house and head home.  While speaking with them, officer’s suspected some, or all, of the group had been drinking.  Field sobriety tests were administered, and as result, a 19 yoa female, 19 yoa male, and 18 yoa male were arrested for Underage Consumption of Alcohol.  They will face charges at RRMC.  There was no damage and nothing was missing from the Nativity scene.
