Avon High crowned two champs at the annual Southwestern Conference Wrestling Championships held at Avon Lake High School last Saturday.
Winning titles for the Eagles were 132-pounder Tommy Sear and Max Borque at 138 pounds.
The team title went to Olmsted Falls as the Bulldogs capped a 9-0 dual meet season by placing 9 wrestlers in Saturday’s finals and claiming 11 podium spots. Falls had firsts from Michael Shaw (106) and Josh Jaeckin (145).
For Avon, Borque’s title will go down as a legendary tournament run. An SWC champ two years ago at 120 pounds, Borque avenged two regular season defeats to top-seeded Kevin Kelley of North Olmsted in Saturday’s semifinals and then avenged another regular season loss with a pin over Brady Stang of Olmsted Falls in the 138 pound finals to send chills through the crowd.
Sear, just a sophomore, claimed his second SWC title at 132 pounds with a 10-4 decision over Liam Kruger of Westlake. On hand to witness Tommy’s win was his grandfather, Joe Scaletta, former Bay High coach who led the Rockets to a state championship in the ‘70’s.
For Avon Lake, Alec Negron won at 126 pounds, Moe Sayed of Westlake was first at 170 and Brandon Henderson of North Ridgeville captured the 195 pound title.
