Avon Lake Band Earns Top Rating at State Marching Band Finals for Second Year in a Row

Congratulations to the Avon Lake Marching Band for earning a top rating at the State Finals for the second year in a row. The 120-member band performed on November 4, 2017, at Brunswick High School, and came away with a Superior rating, the highest rating a band can earn at State. The band has swept this season with Superior ratings at every Ohio Music Education Association (OMEA) marching band contest.

“The students in the marching band this year are really amazing,” said David Eddleman, director. “They take pride in the way they look and sound on the field and as a result, have had great success at OMEA contests, sweeping the season with four superior ratings. The greatest affirmation of their abilities came at the State Marching Band Finals at Brunswick High School at the end of the season where they earned the top rating from the judges. Having scored a superior rating at state for the first time last year, coming back and doing it again this year was especially gratifying for the band members.”

The marching band has competed in OMEA Adjudicated Performances since 2005. The band qualified for state marching band finals in 2005, 2007, 2008, 2010, 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017. This year is the second time the band has earned a superior (top) rating at state marching band finals, having earned excellent ratings in all of the previous State finals performances. This is the second year the band has had a season sweep earning Superior ratings at all of the band’s OMEA performances.

“It takes a large and dedicated team to achieve at this level, which includes not only our band members, but also our teaching staff, eighth-grade helpers, parents, and supporters,” said Eddleman. “We owe a debt of gratitude to our school system and our community for supporting our musical activities in our schools.”
