Four Westlake Teachers Participate in Federal Grant for English Learners

Four Westlake City School District teachers received federal grants to attend the Northeast Ohio ACHIEVE program through the University of Akron.

ACHIEVE (Access to Curriculum and High Quality Instruction for Educators Valuing English Learners) is funded by a five-year National Professional Development grant from the U.S. Department of Education.

Bassett Elementary third-grade teacher Hannah Lozada, Dover Elementary teacher Rachel Meyrose, Hilliard Elementary teacher Sara Moennich and Hilliard Elementary fourth-grade teacher Jennifer Bernath will complete the full Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) endorsement over the course of a year. The focus of the grant is on increasing the proficiency of teachers who work with English learners, particularly early childhood and elementary level teachers.

NE Ohio ACHIEVE partners include Akron Public Schools, Cleveland Metropolitan School District, Cuyahoga Falls City School District, Lakewood City Schools, Lorain City Schools and Westlake City Schools, along with Kent State University and the University of Akron.
