Avon Place Skilled Nursing in Avon had a wonderful 101st birthday celebration for their resident Fran Berner. Fran was born in the Bronx, NYC to immigrants, Louis and James Donlon on March 23, 1917. Fran met her future husband, David Berner when she was 14. They were married before David’s Army deployment during WWII to Edinburgh Scotland. After the war, they both worked for Bloomingdales in New York. They became very involved with the United Jewish Appeal (UJA). The UJA helped the newly formed State of Israel and many Jewish refugees who had survived the Holocaust. They traveled to Tel Aviv several times where David was acknowledged for his great work with the organization.
Fran and David moved all over the country with UJA. They lived in 41 states. Fran traveled with him doing his typing and bookwork. They eventually took a trip to Lorain Ohio with UJA, loved the area and moved there. They both became avid golfers. Fran was very involved with the community and had many close friends. Fran was an active member of the Oberlin Golf Club for over 50 years.
Fran had many friends that she traveled with. Her dearest friend, Jenny, moved into assisted living with Fran until Jenny passed away a few years ago. Fran misses her very much.
Fran has had an exciting, lively life and she is still healthy. She was wished a very “Happy Birthday Aunt Fran from Nancy, Sean, Arline, Patty, Louise and Phillip and all their children. Have many more birthdays and may God Bless you always.”
