Thanks to the generosity of Ohio Concrete and the careful planning of first grade teacher Stephanie Reddy, first and second grade students at Holy Trinity school participated in a morning of STEM education all their own.
On a beautiful morning in early May, Holy Trinity’s youngest students took turns exploring a cement truck followed by constructing their own miniature sailboats out of concrete. The students’ objective was to use two different concrete mixtures to create two different boats. Students then predicted whether the boats would sink or float based on the chemicals in the mixture.
Volunteers from Ohio Concrete took turns visiting each classroom and extended the hands on STEM lesson with a real world application of how science, particularly chemistry, is applied in constructing items students use in their everyday lives.
