This spring, 18 Bay Village Tree Conservancy volunteers planted 30 new canopy-scale trees throughout the city, continuing efforts to preserve and strengthen Bay Village’s urban forest. The trees were purchased by residents through the Conservancy’s annual Win-Win Tree Program, which makes it easy for Bay Village homeowners to add high-quality shade trees to their properties while helping to renew the community’s overall tree canopy.
Residents may have noticed newly planted trees and support stakes appearing around town this spring. These visible signs represent more than just new landscaping—they reflect our community’s commitment to maintaining a healthy tree canopy.
A thriving canopy doesn’t happen by accident. It requires both caring for the mature trees we already have and replacing those that are lost to age, disease, storms, or other causes. While Bay Village is fortunate to have a strong tree canopy, maintaining that strength means continually investing in new trees that will become the canopy of the future.
Each tree planted today contributes to cleaner air, reduced stormwater runoff, wildlife habitat, energy savings, and the overall character and beauty that make Bay Village such a desirable place to live.
The planting included a mix of London plane trees and White oaks. London planes are closely related to sycamores and are valued for their adaptability, longevity, and ability to thrive in urban environments. White oaks, known for their strength and ecological benefits, will provide shade, habitat, and beauty for generations to come.
Perhaps most encouraging is the support these plantings represent. Seeing new trees throughout the city is a reminder that residents, volunteers, donors, and community partners recognize the importance of trees and continue to support the Conservancy’s mission.
The Bay Village Tree Conservancy will continue its planting efforts this fall with another community tree sale, this time featuring maple varieties. The sale will provide residents with an opportunity to add trees to their own properties while helping strengthen the city’s overall canopy.
The work of growing and preserving an urban forest is never finished, but every tree planted is an investment in Bay Village’s future. Thanks to the support of our community, that future is looking a little greener every year.
