As the first responders to medical emergencies, emergency medicine technicians are a critical partner in Mercy’s mission to care for our community.
To help ensure local EMTs are equipped with information on the latest advancements, Mercy hosted an EMS Symposium on Thursday, November 12 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Mercy Regional Medical Center.
The first of its kind in Lorain County, the innovative event was the vision of Gilbert Palmer, MD, FAEP, Associate Chief Medical Officer of Mercy Regional Medical Center and Medical Director and section head for the Department of Emergency Medicine at Mercy Regional Medical Center.
“EMS are important providers in the care for our community,” says Dr. Palmer, “I am honored to lead an event which helps EMS advance their skills in the field while giving us the opportunity to discuss ways that we can enhance the way we work together.”
The symposium provided a day of networking and information on the latest advancements on issues paramedics see every day in the field, including the latest in stroke treatment, trauma management, pediatric resuscitation and more. Recognizing the nature of the EMS work, the event was designed so that EMTs could attend all or part of the event, ensuring that our community has adequate emergency medicine coverage. EMTs from dozens of communities took part.
“Looking around, we can see providers from all reaches of the county,” said Dr. Palmer as he welcomed guests. “Today, I am proud, so proud to see our community come together to discover, learn and encourage an even higher level of care and understanding around what it is that we do every day.”
Dr. Palmer credited Mercy President and CEO Edwin Oley for his enthusiastic support when the symposium was proposed. He said, “‘Gil, run with this and strengthen our community, strengthen those who take care of our patients. It is what we do,” reported Dr. Palmer.
