Berklee College Accepts 8 Tri-C Jazz Studies Applicants

Tri-C TriC

Eight Jazz Studies students have been accepted as third-year transfers to the Berklee College of Music in Boston, the premier institution for training students for careers in popular music.

This marks the largest class of students to be accepted in the 12 years that Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C®) has had an articulation agreement with Berklee. The students perform on drums, acoustic bass, trumpet, guitar and vocals. Some also have been accepted at other four-year schools, and are weighing their choices for the future.

“Berklee is the No. 1 contemporary music institution in the world,” said Steve Enos, director of Tri-C’s Jazz Studies program. “They have partnerships with more than 20 conservatories representing each continent in the world as part of the Berklee International Network. They’re the leader in contemporary music, and the first institution that thought it was even possible to teach jazz education.”

Enos is elated about the options now open to his students.

“It’s difficult in this day and age for students to follow through. Those (music) students were on average taking 18 to 20 credit hours,” he said.

For vocalist Rose Kanj, acceptance at Berklee marks the continuation of a plan for a music career that started when she was a high schooler dreaming about where she’d go to college.

She and her parents visited Boston to check out Berklee. “We were there on a tour, and I really loved it,” Kanj said. When she mentioned she didn’t know how she’d pay for it, her Berklee contact told her, “if you’re by Cleveland, check out Tri-C’s music program.”

Tri-C’s Jazz Studies program has worked closely with Berklee to set curriculum standards so that students who complete a prescribed course of study for the first two years can move seamlessly into Berklee’s four-year program.

“Berklee lets us use their books,” Enos said. “We’re teaching their core program.”

Kanj applied to Berklee after her tour and was accepted, but she also took her contact’s advice and called Tri-C. She toured the new Tommy LiPuma Center for Creative Arts, and met with Enos. He encouraged her to sign up for a summer class. After that, she followed the curriculum mapped out between Tri-C and Berklee.

This year, she applied again to Berklee and auditioned as well, believing that her Tri-C studies would help her win a scholarship. She was awarded $10,000 and will start at Berklee in the fall.

“My ultimate goal is to be in the industry as a vocalist,” she said. “I don’t have to be on the radio, I just want to be successful. Just as long as I know people are liking what I’m doing.”

For information about the Jazz Studies program or Summer with the Jazz Masters, Tri-C’s summer camp for ages 12 to 18, visit www.tri-c.edu or call Steve Enos at 216-987-4256.

Westlake Police Weekly Blotter

Westlake Police logo

An 18-year-old North Olmsted man and a 34-year-old Westlake man had a traffic altercation on May 13 at 6:13PM. Both were at the Crocker-Detroit Rds. intersection. The younger man said the older man slapped him after an exchange of words about the elder’s driving. The older man said that the younger man dared him to approach, so he flicked the younger man’s forehead. The prosecutor will rule on any possible charges.

A 38-year-old Westlake woman got herself banned from a Detroit Rd. restaurant due to intoxicated behavior on May 13 at 10:20PM. She was told to leave by staff and refused. Officers found that she also had an active WPD warrant for a probation violation, so she was arrested for that and for DCI.

A 20-year-old Westlake man and his 19-year-old girlfriend reported squabbling with his relatives at his parents’ Radcliffe Dr. home on May 14 at 9:26PM. Both had been drinking and his sister had taken the female’s car keys. This was unsatisfactory to the male, so he gave his mother and sister a hard time. Both the male and female were arrested for DCI and Underage Consumption.

A MI man’s 2010 Dodge Avenger was broken into on the night of May 14 while he was staying at the Holiday Inn. A food assistance card was taken after the unknown suspect(s) broke the passenger window. Two more vehicles were then found to have been entered in that lot. A PA man’s 2012 Chevrolet Malibu had a GPS and IPod taken (total value $700) after the passenger window was broken. A WI man’s VW Passat was entered by breaking the passenger window; an MP3 player and Ipod (total value $700) were taken.

Similar offenses took place at a Sperry Dr. hotel and an apartment parking lot in the same time frame. A Hudson man’s 2010 Acura TL had the driver’s window smashed and an IPod taken at the hotel. A 2011 Ford pickup belonging to a Westford Cr. man had $200 cash and the vehicle’s spare key taken after the passenger window was broken. A woman’s 2008 Pontiac G6 was also broken into on Westford Cr.: checks and credit cards were taken. Her bank reports at least one transaction was made with one of the cards. No suspects.

An employee reported a theft from an unlocked locker at St. John Medical Center on May 14 between 2PM-3:15PM. The employee left work, forgetting his wallet. 2 hours later, the issuing bank contacted his wife about suspicious purchases made with his credit card. He is gathering the particulars on those illicit transactions for further investigation.

A Lincoln Rd. man came home and saw his non-custodial 14-year-old son and two unknown females run from his house on May 15 at 5:31PM. They were dropping cans of beer as they fled. The father found an attempted entry through a window and also that the garage pedestrian door had been kicked in. The son was arrested the next day for Burglary. He was later released to his custodial grandmother.

WPD officers assisted Bay Village PD with a barricaded 47-year-old male at his Aberdeen Rd. home on May 16 at 5:36PM. The male had 2 active WPD warrants for contempt of court and had been loading and unloading rounds into a shotgun. After a time, he was persuaded to exit the house, but refused to submit to arrest. He was tasered, subdued, handcuffed, and then transported to St. John Medical Center as is standard procedure. He was subsequently transferred to a VA facility for a mental health examination. He was then turned back over to WPD on the afternoon of May 17.

Witnesses pointed out a suspected shoplifter’s vehicle to an offduty WPD officer working security on May 16 at 8:26PM. They had seen a male suspect exit a Main St. store and set off the anti-theft alarm, then enter the vehicle and hide. The 34-year-old Cleveland man was arrested for Petty Theft; he had taken $236 worth of clothing. He also had an active Fairlawn PD warrant for the same offense.

The driver’s rear window on a Westwood Rd. man’s 2012 Nissan Altima was broken with a rock at 1:47AM on May 17. The owner was alerted by his car alarm sounding. Some loose change may have been taken; no suspects.
