Following is Westlake Porter Public Library’s September, 2018 calendar of events:

Saturdays, September 1 and 29 (10:30-11 a.m.) Mother Goose On the Loose! – An interactive storytime featuring simple books, rhymes, songs and movement. For ages birth-3 years old with a caregiver. No registration required.

Saturday, September 1 (4-5 p.m.) 3D Printing Orientation – In order to use the library’s 3D printer, you’ll need to take this orientation first. Learn library policies about using it, how to download a 3D-printable object, and how to prepare it for a great print. Please register.

Saturdays, September 1 and 29 (4-5:30 p.m.) STEAMMaker Lab – 9/1 topic: Bristlebots! Make and run your very own Bristlebot. 9/29 topic: Dem Bones, Dem Bones! Study and create your own human skeleton model. Grades 3-5. Please register.

Sunday, September 2 and Monday, September 3 – Library closed in observance of Labor Day

Tuesdays, September 4, 11, 18 and 25 (2-3 p.m.) Conversational Spanish – Spanish is the most popular second language learned in the United States. Please join us to learn Spanish vocabulary and pronunciation with an expert instructor. You’re sure to be speaking the romance language fluently in no time. No registration required.

Tuesday, September 4 (7-8:30 p.m.) Origami: Learn the Art of Paper Folding! – Join an instructor from Ohio Paper Folders to learn the art of origami and do some paper folding of your own! This program is for beginners and experts alike, no previous experience necessary. Please register.

Wednesdays, September 5, 12, 19 and 26 (10:15 & 11 a.m.) Let’s Sing and Dance! – Sing and move to the music with Miss Nancy! For children ages 2-6 with a caregiver. Please arrive early to receive a ticket.

Wednesday, September 5 (1-2:30 p.m.) Cuyahoga West Genealogy Society Help Session – Please join the genealogy group for an informal walk-in help session.

Wednesdays, September 5, 12, 19 and 26 (4-5:30 p.m.) and Thursdays, September 6, 13, 20 and 27 (6:30-8 p.m.) Bow Wow Books – Stop by Youth Services to sign up for a 10-minute reading time with a reading therapy dog. Registration begins each Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. and Thursday at 6 p.m.

Wednesday, September 5 (6:30-8:30 p.m.) Horror Film Club – Calling all horror film fans: Join us for another creepy classic from the vault…if you dare! New members are always welcome, but children under 13 should be accompanied by an adult. Please register.

Thursday, September 6 (10-11:30 a.m.) Touching Up Digital Photos – Learn beginner-intermediate level techniques for altering and repairing digital photos, including cropping, adjusting color levels, and removing blemishes. Practice files will be provided, but participants are welcome to bring a flash drive with their own photos. Please register.

Thursdays, September 6, 13, 20 and 27 (4-5 p.m.) Code Club! – Learn how to build an app, design a video game, and change the world through code! Grades 3-4. Registration begins one week before each session.

Friday, September 7 (3:30-4:30 p.m.) Got Science? – There are millions of insects in the world. Join Got Science? as we delve into the world of insects. Grades 1 and 2. Registration begins August 31.

Saturday, September 8 (10-11:30 a.m.) Beginning Coding for Adults – Learn the basics of coding through self-paced online modules. An instructor will be on hand to help get you started and to facilitate lessons. Please register.

Saturday, September 8 (10 a.m.-4 p.m.) Grandparent’s Day Fun! – Show your love and appreciation for the grandparent or special grown-up in your life by making a craft for them! All supplies provided. No registration required.

Saturday, August 11 (10:30-11:15 a.m.) and Monday, September 17 (6:30-7:15 p.m.) Adapted Storytime – Children with varying learning styles and abilities learn in a safe, supportive environment where respect and appreciation for differences are encouraged. This 30 minute storytime, followed by time for socialization, is designed for children who may not be successful in a typical storytime experience. Content is geared toward ages 3-7, but all ages are welcome. Siblings may also attend, but must register separately. Registration begins one week before each session.

Saturday, September 8 (2-3 p.m.) Alternatives to Cable TV – Frustrated with cable service? This program will help you sort through the variety of viewing alternatives available. Learn about digital media players, streaming services, and additional options. Please register.

Saturday, September 8 (2-3 p.m.) Brick Builders – Love those bricks? Bring your ideas and imagination! Lego® and Duplo® bricks provided. For ages 3-12. No registration required.

Saturday, September 8 (3:30-4 p.m.) Family Storytime – An interactive family storytime featuring books, rhymes, songs, movement, and a small craft. For families with children ages 2-6. No registration required.

Sunday, September 9 (3-4 p.m.) Art Smarts – Explore works of a well-known artist and then use what you’ve seen to create an art piece of your own! This month’s artist is Pablita Velarde. Grades 3-6. Please register.

Mondays, September 10, 17 and 24 (3:30-5:30 p.m.) Teen Lounge – Need a place to hang out after school? Come to WPPL’s Teen Lounge on Monday afternoons! We have computers, video games, board games, snacks, and more! For grades 7-12 only. No registration required.

Mondays September 10, 17 and 24 (4-5 p.m.) Tween Code Club – Learn how to build an app, design a video game, and change the world through code! Registration begins one week before each session. Grades 3-8.

Monday, September 10 (6:30-8 p.m.) Introduction to Finding Grants – Discover what funders are looking for in nonprofits seeking grants and how to find potential funders in this introductory course led by Foundation Center’s David Holmes. Class will end with 30 minutes of hands-on, guided online grant research. It is advisable, but not necessary, to bring a laptop/tablet for this portion of the class. Please register.

Monday, September 10 (7-8:30 p.m.) Medicare 101 – John Avon, a Medicare Specialist with Aetna Insurance Company, will take you through the Ohio Senior Health Insurance Information Program (OSHIIP). Learn about Original Medicare, Medicare Supplements and Medicare Advantage Plans. Increase your understanding of the “Donut Hole” and other Part D prescription coverage rules and learn how to utilize Medicare enrollment periods. Please register.

Tuesday, September 11 (10-11:30 a.m.) Intro to Smartphones – Learn the basics of using smartphones, such as screen brightness, wifi settings, adding apps, and more! If bringing your device, please bring all account passwords. Please register.

Tuesday, September 11 (7 p.m.) Tuesday Evening Book Discussion – In September we’ll discuss Small Great Things by Jodi Picoult.

Thursday, September 13 (2-3:30 p.m.) Great Decisions Discussion Program on World Affairs – Discuss critical global issues facing America today. At the beginning of each month a copy of the article may be picked up at the Ask Us Desk. Please read prior to the meeting. Please register.

Thursday, September 13 (7-8:30 p.m.) A Concert of Crickets and Katydids – In late summer and early autumn crickets and katydids take the stage for nature’s final musical performances of the year! Dr. Lisa Rainsong of the Cleveland Institute of Music will introduce you to the members of this delightful ensemble and explain how to identify who’s doing all that singing! Please register.

Friday, September 14 (9:30 and 10:30 a.m.) and Saturday, September 15 (9:30, 10:30 and 11:30 a.m.) Connecting for Kids’Music Therapy & More^SM – For families and their children (ages 0-6 years) who are struggling in an area of development. Join us for a hands-on program designed to teach families how to use music to improve their child’s motor, communication and social skills as well as behavior. This program is led by a Board-Certified Music Therapist. Siblings (ages 0-6 years) may also attend but must register separately. Each session is 30 minutes. Saturday, September 15 (3-5 p.m.) Anime Club – A great club for anime and manga lovers! All otakus and newbies are welcome! Grades 7 to adult. No registration required.

Monday, September 17 (1-1:30 p.m.) Yoga Time! – This is a perfect way to introduce yoga and practice simple poses that imitate animals and nature. Remember to wear comfortable clothing and bring a towel or yoga mat. Ages 3 and up with a caregiver. No registration required.

Monday, September 17 (7-8:30 p.m.) Investors’ Interest Group: Introduction to Annuities – Join us as we learn the answers to the following questions – What is an annuity? Should I choose taxable vs. tax deferred growth? Which is a better choice – fixed vs variable? Presented by the non-profit Society for Financial Awareness, Michael Zawatsky. Please register.

Monday, September 17 (7-8:30 p.m.) Maker Monday: Transform Your Memories Into Digital – WPPL has Maker Stations that can convert your records into mp3s, your slides and pictures into digital formats, and your VHS tapes into DVDs. Learn how here! Please register.

Tuesday, September 18 (1-3 p.m.) Career: Targeting for Hidden Jobs – When searching for a new position wouldn’t it be great to get a list of available positions that fit you perfectly? Tuesday, September 18 (6:30-8 p.m.) Connecting for Kids’ Speaker Series – Join us for a presentation by local, pediatric professionals. Thursday, September 20 (Noon-1:30 p.m.) Small Business Lunch & Learn: Business Law – This seminar will cover the legal topics that most entrepreneurs and business owners will encounter in the start-up and running of their businesses. Attendees will learn about business start-up issues, doing business with a partner, lease review, general contract matters and general intellectual property issues. Attendees will also have an opportunity to ask questions pertaining to his/her business. Please register.

Thursday, September 20 (Preschool session: 6:30 p.m.) and Friday, September 21 (Preschool session: 9:30 a.m. and Toddler Session: 11:30 a.m.) Teach Me to Play^SM – A play-based program for families and their children (Toddler: ages 18 months-2 years and Preschool: ages 3-6 years) who are struggling in an area of development. Diverse opportunities for learning are provided, with an emphasis on facilitating communication, practicing social interactions and responding to behaviors in a positive way. Each themed session offers a variety of engaging individual, small and whole group activities. The staff coaches families, demonstrates and suggests strategies, responds to questions and provides resources. The program is led by an experienced Early Intervention Specialist and Speech-Language Pathologist. Friday, September 21 (3:30-4:15 p.m.) Fun Science Friday: Dinosaur Discovery – Join Mrs. K as we explore the wonders of our world. What happened to the dinosaurs? We’ll answer that question and more. Discoveries will be made through hands-on experiments, active participation and a simple fossil to take home. Ages 4-6. Registration begins September 14.

Saturday, September 22 (10:30-11:30 a.m.) Pokemon Fun! – A fun morning of Pokemon-themed play, prizes, and crafts! Ages 6-11. No registration required.

Saturday, September 22 (1-4 p.m.) WPPL Health Fair – Learn more about your health and how to stay healthy at all ages at WPPL’s Health Fair! You’ll have a chance to participate in three different programs (registration required), get health screenings (vision, blood pressure and stroke risk assessment), and visit with area health organizations. Registration required for programs only.

Saturday, September 22 (1-1:30 p.m.) Yoga with Inner Bliss Yoga Studio – Join us for a free Yoga class with Inner Bliss Yoga Studio. Presented as part of the WPPL Health Fair. Please register.

Saturday, September 22 (1:30-2:30 p.m.) Healthy Living for Brain and Body – For centuries, we’ve known that the health of the brain and the body are connected. But now, science is able to provide insights into how to make lifestyle choices that may help you keep your brain and body healthy as you age. Join us to learn about research in the areas of diet and nutrition, exercise, cognitive activity and social engagement, and use hands-on tools to help you incorporate these recommendations into a plan for healthy aging. Presented by the Alzheimer’s Association as part of the WPPL Health Fair. Please register.

Saturday, September 22 (3-4 p.m.) What is Functional Medicine? – Functional Medicine, as defined by the Institute for Functional Medicine, is “a systems biology-based approach that focuses on identifying and addressing the root cause of disease.” Join us as Dr. Emily Brawner talks about this whole-person approach to medicine. Dr. Brawner is currently pursuing her certification in Functional Medicine. Dr. Brawner practices Pulmonary/Critical Care medicine at Genesis Healthcare System in Zanesville, Ohio. Sunday, September 23 (2-3:30 p.m.) Boredom Busters! – Are you bored? Drop by the Storytime Room and join in the fun! We will have different activities available each month. All ages welcome! No registration necessary!

Tuesday, September 25 (2-3:30 p.m.) Travel Club: Travel Apps – There are apps for everything, they can tell you what weather to expect, where the best deals can be found, or even help to order your lunch. What about travel and planning your vacation? Join us as one of our librarians describes various apps available to help you plan your next big adventure or trip around town. Please note: The location for the meeting for this month only has been switched to the Porter Room. Registration begins August 26.

Tuesday, September 25 (7-8 p.m.) ACT/SAT Test Prep Seminar – Students in grades 10-12 and their parents are invited to join us for a presentation on the differences between the ACT and the SAT, including what both tests look like, what’s tested and how they’re scored, in order to help you decide which test (or both) is more appropriate to take. You’ll also receive tips and tricks to get the best score possible! Presented by Sylvan Learning Center Registration begins September 18.

Tuesday, September 25 (7-7:30 p.m.) Bedtime Stories – Put on your pajamas and join Mrs. K. as we unwind at the end of the day with stories, songs, fingerplays, and other activities. This month: Goodnight Dinosaurs. Ages 4-6. Siblings welcome. No registration required.

Tuesday, September 25 (7-8:30 p.m.) Westlake Candidates Night – The League of Women Voters will present an opportunity for candidates on the November 2018 ballot for Ohio Congressional District 16, Ohio House District 16 and Cuyahoga County Council District 1 to speak to the public. Timed presentations will be based on questions written by the audience and moderated by a member of the League. Citizens will also have an opportunity to register to vote, update their voter registration and/or apply for mail-in ballots.

Wednesday, September 26 (2 p.m.) Wednesday Afternoon Book Discussion – The September selection is Carrying Albert Home by Homer Hickam.

Friday, September 28 (10-10:45 a.m.) Come Play With Me! – Open playtime with age-appropriate toys. For children ages 2-5 with a caring adult. Siblings welcome! No registration required.

Friday, September 28 (10 a.m.-Noon) Fiber Fanatics – A time for needlecrafters to share, solve problems, and show off.

Saturday, September 29 (2-3 p.m.) DIY Zen Garden – Get your Zen on and make your own relaxing Zen Garden. You can design your own garden and take it home to use in the future. Grades 6-8. Registration begins September 22.

Sunday, September 30 (2-3 p.m.) American Girl Doll Club: Isabelle Palmer – Join us for a discussion about Isabelle, the 2014 Girl of the Year, who discovers a unique talent to call her very own. We too will try to find our own unique talents through a craft and games! Ages 6-11. Registration begins September 23.

Sunday, September 30 (2-4 p.m.) Chess Club – Hone your chess skills or learn how to play the game. Recommended for ages 6+, but all ages are welcome. If you have a chess set, please bring it with you. No registration necessary.
