On Wednesday, Sept. 19, the Kevin C. Martin Leadership Award was presented to Brad Calabrese, General Manager of the Fitness Center at University Hospitals Avon Health Center. He received the award from Kristi Sink, MHA, FACHE, President of University Hospitals Elyria Medical Center, during the hospital’s yearly employee recognition dinner.

Developed in 2005 as part of UH Elyria Medical Center’s Rewards and Appreciation program, this annually distributed honor recognizes leaders who consistently demonstrate the values that are essential to the organization’s success. The award was named for Mr. Kevin C. Martin, the late President and Chief Executive Officer of UH Elyria Medical Center from 1998 until February 2009, when he succumbed to cancer.

As General Manager of the fitness center, Brad is responsible for oversight of the daily operations and finances of the 60,000 square-foot facility. With an overall full and part-time staff of 76, 46 employees report directly to him.

The fact that Kevin C. Martin Leadership Award winners are nominated by their staff members or peers holds special meaning for its recipients. “I’m humbled that my staff nominated me for this exceptional honor,” said Brad. “But, it’s truly a team award. I’m grateful for the nomination and for their continuous support.”

According to the nomination form submitted by one of his staff members, “Brad is a dedicated servant leader. He puts in a lot of hours at the fitness center and is also available 7 days a week. Brad is highly accountable and holds staff accountable with timely feedback. I’ve learned a lot from Brad in this area – he’s one of the best.”

Brad has been with UH Elyria Medical Center for more than 10 years. During that time, the Fitness Center has been named the “Best of Lorain County” for 8 consecutive years in the fitness center category of Pulse magazine’s annual compilation. It was also named a “Top 100 Club” for 2017 by Club Industry.
