Following is Westlake Porter Public Library’s March, 2019 calendar of events:

Friday, March 1 (4-4:45 p.m.) Fun Science Friday: Go Green – Join Mrs. K as we explore the wonders of our world! It’s good to be green, but how is the color green made? Come discover primary and secondary colors along with other green activities, experiments and a take-home project. Ages 4-6. Registration begins February 22.

Saturday, March 2 (10 a.m.-4 p.m.) Mardi Gras Craft Day! – L’aissez les bon temps rouler! (That’s French for “Let the good times roll!”) Join us for a fun day of crafts as we get ready to celebrate Mardi Gras! No registration required.

Saturday, March 2 (10:30 -11:30 a.m.) Pokemon Fun! – A fun morning of Pokemon themed play, prizes, and crafts! Ages 6-11. No registration required.

Saturdays, March 2 and 16 (2-3 p.m.) Brick Builders – Love those bricks? Bring your ideas and imagination! Lego® and Duplo® bricks provided. For ages 3-12. No registration required.

Mondays, March 4, 11, 18 and 25 (3:30-5:30 p.m.) Teen Lounge – Need a place to hang out after school? Come to WPPL’s Teen Lounge on Monday afternoons! We have computers, video games, board games, snacks, and more! For grades 7-12 only. No registration required.

Mondays, March 4, 11, 18 and 25 (4-5 p.m.) Learning Centers – Learn about science, technology, engineering, arts, and math using STEAM kits set up in stations around the PC Lab. Space is limited for each weekly session. Grades 4-5. Registration begins one week before each session.

Monday, March 4 (7-8:45 p.m.) Battle for the Ballot: Cleveland’s Suffragette Movement – Learn about a band of women, inexperienced in politics, who dedicated themselves to public interest and grew into an organization that won the respect and confidence of the nation. Please register.

Tuesday, March 5 (10-11 a.m.) Learn a Foreign Language – Parlez-vous français? Sprechen Sie Deutch? ¿Habla español? Learn to use free library resources like Mango and Transparent Languages to learn a new language. Please register.

Tuesdays, March 5, 12, 19 and 26 (2-3:30 p.m.) Conversational Spanish – Spanish is the most popular second language learned in the United States. Please join us to learn Spanish vocabulary and pronunciation with an expert instructor. You’re sure to be speaking the romance language fluently in no time. No registration required.

Tuesday, March 5 (6:30 p.m.) Connecting for Kids’ Coffee and Chat – Join our interactive support group and meet other families facing similar struggles. This group is for families of children ages 0-12 years. Free, supervised children’s activities are available, but adults and children must register separately. Topic: Food Allergies – Support and Resources. Whether your child is newly diagnosed with food allergies or you have been on this journey for years, we invite you to join Abby Glick, MD, of Northeast Ohio Food Allergy Network (NEOFAN) and other families as we discuss our experiences. We will share tips for dealing with food outside the home and managing family and friends who just don’t understand. We will also discuss 25 Things Only a Food Allergy Parent Would Understand. Tuesday, March 5 (7-7:30 p.m.) Bedtime Stories: Roar of a Snore – Put on your pajamas and join Mrs. K as we unwind at the end of the day. Relax with quiet stories, songs, fingerplays, and other activities to help us get ready for bedtime. Ages 4-6. Siblings welcome. No registration required.

Wednesdays, March 6, 13, 20 and 27 (10:15 & 11 a.m.) Let’s Sing and Dance! – Sing and move to the music with Miss Nancy! For children ages 2-6 with a caregiver. Please arrive early to receive a ticket.

Wednesday, March 6 (1-2:30 p.m.) Cuyahoga West Genealogy Society Help Session – Please join the genealogy group for an informal walk-in help session.

Wednesdays, March 6, 13, 20 and 27 (4-5:30 p.m.) and Thursdays, March 7, 14 21 and 28 (6:30-8 p.m.) Bow Wow Books – Stop by Youth Services to sign up for a 10-minute reading time with a reading therapy dog. Registration begins each Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. and Thursday at 6 p.m.

Wednesday, March 6 (6:30-8:30 p.m.) Horror Film Club – Calling all horror film fans: Join us for another creepy classic from the vault…if you dare! New members are always welcome, but children under 13 should be accompanied by an adult. Please register.

Thursday, March 7 (10-11:30 a.m.) Beginning Coding for Adults – What is coding? Learn the basics of coding through self-paced online modules. An instructor will be on hand to help get you started and to facilitate lessons. Please register.

Thursdays, March 7, 14, 21 and 28 (4-5 p.m.) Code Club! – Learn how to build an app, design a video game, and change the world through code! Grades 3-4. Registration begins one week before each session.

Friday, March 8 and Saturday, March 9 (9:30 and 10:30 a.m.) Connecting for Kids’Music Therapy & More^SM – For families and their children (ages 0-6 years) who are struggling in an area of development. Join us for a hands-on program designed to teach families how to use music to improve their child’s motor, communication and social skills as well as behavior. This program is led by a Board-Certified Music Therapist. Siblings (ages 0-6 years) may also attend but must register separately. Each session is 30 minutes. Saturday, March 9 (3:30-5 p.m.) STEAMMaker Lab: The Golden Pi – You are explorers and archaeologists trying to find the priceless Pi Idol in an ancient cave near Babylon. You need to crack all the codes and safely get the artifact out of the cave. This is your only chance to get the most valuable artifact in the world! Grades 3-5. Registration begins March 2.

Saturday, March 9 (4-5 p.m.) 3D Printing Orientation – In order to use the library’s 3D printer, you’ll need to take this orientation first. Learn library policies about using it, how to download a 3D-printable object, and how to prepare it for a great print. Please register.

Sunday, March 10 (2-3 p.m.) American Girl Doll Club: Truly Me Let’s Talk Friendship – Have fun discovering fun facts about your friends and yourselves. Explore, discover and celebrate who you truly are through games, activities and crafts. Ages 6-11. Registration begins March 3.

Sundays, March 10 and 31 (2-4 p.m.) Chess Club – Hone your chess skills or learn how to play the game. Recommended for ages 6+, but all ages are welcome. If you have a chess set, please bring it with you. No registration necessary.

Sunday, March 10 (2-3 p.m.) Friends’ Sunday Sounds – Join the Friends for a musical performance by Monica Robins and The Whiskey Kings, who have been rocking Cleveland since 1998 and feature classic rock hits of the last four decades and much more. Please register.

Monday, March 11 (6:30-8 p.m.) Sibling Revelry Book Club – Sit back, grab a brew, and join us for the Sibling Revelry Book Club. The discussion will be held in the party room at Sibling Revelry Brewery (29305 Clemens Road). Titles will be announced two months before each discussion, with eBooks and eAudiobooks options available through Hoopla Digital (https://theclub.hoopladigital.com/). The March title is The Orphan’s Tale by Pam Jenoff. Outside food and non-alcoholic beverages are welcome. Please no outside alcohol.

Tuesday, March 12 (Noon-12:45 p.m.) How to Improve Your Brain Health – Join Dr. Casen DeMaria from the Drugless Doctors for a dynamic and fun workshop on what you can do naturally to help your brain function. Thursday, March 14 (2-3:30 p.m.) Great Decisions Discussion Program on World Affairs – Discuss critical global issues facing America today. At the beginning of each month a copy of the article may be picked up at the Ask Us Desk. Please read prior to the meeting. Please register.

Thursday, March 14 (7-8 p.m.) Intro to Ballroom Dancing – Learn some basic dance steps with an instructor from Starz Ballroom. Wear comfortable clothing. Couples and singles welcome. Please register.

Friday, March 15 (11:30 a.m.-1 p.m.) Connecting for Kids’ Speaker Series: Sensory Strategies to Build Every Child’s Self Control and Competence – What is the best way to equip your child to stay in control of his or her emotions and behaviors through the ups and downs of daily life? Are you interested in finding ways to coach your child rather than having to referee an outburst? Join Meghan Barlow, PhD, of Meghan Barlow and Associates, and Christine Chambers, OTR/L, MEd of Abilities First, LLC, as they provide practical tips that families can implement immediately to help children successfully navigate through their daily activities. Friday, March 15 (4-5 p.m.) Got Science? – Join us as we delve into the world of science. This month’s topic: The Science Behind Simple Machines! Grades 1 and 2. Registration begins March 8.

Saturday, March 16 (10-11:30 a.m.) Intermediate Coding for Adults – Learn intermediate coding through self-paced online modules. An instructor will be on hand to help get you started and to facilitate lessons. The class focus is on Python and Raspberry Pi. Please register.

Saturday, March 16 (1-4 p.m.) Baseball Extravaganza – Baseball season is almost here! Get ready for another season of America’s pastime by spending the afternoon at WPPL. Baseball Extravaganza includes appearances by local mascots, a baseball-themed storytime, popcorn and a presentation by Jonathan Knight! Jonathan Knight is the author of ten books on Cleveland sports with a reputation as “one of the most articulate and devoted sportswriters in Ohio,” according to the Akron Beacon Journal. Saturday, March 16 (3:30-4 p.m.) Family Storytime – An interactive family storytime featuring books, rhymes, songs, movement, and a small craft. For families with children ages 2-6. No registration required.

Sunday, March 17 (2-3:30 p.m.) Boredom Busters! – Are you bored? Drop by the Storytime Room and join in the fun! We will have different activities available each month. All ages welcome! No registration necessary!

Sunday, March 17 (3-4 p.m.) Art Smarts – Explore works of a well-known artist and then use what you’ve seen to create an art piece of your own! This month’s focus is Celtic Art. Grades 3-6. Registration begins March 10.

Monday, March 18 (1-1:30 p.m.) Yoga Time! – This is a perfect way to introduce yoga and practice simple poses. Remember to wear comfortable clothing and bring a towel or yoga mat. Ages 3 and up with a caregiver. No registration necessary. Namaste!

Monday, March 18 (7-8:30 p.m.) Investors’ Interest Group: Connecting the Economy to the Stock Market – The economy and the stock market are tightly interconnected, with economics being a large driver of market behavior. Graphical representations are particularly useful for monitoring economic and market cycles, with minimal effort. This talk will examine economic and stock market data, underlying signals, and market cycles and will demonstrate some simple steps that any investor can follow to obtain clearer information to guide his/her efforts. Monday, March 18 (7-8:30 p.m.) Maker Monday: Editing Home Movies – Your home movies are already in a digital format (or can be using our Maker Stations). Now you want to edit them and put them onto a new DVD, but how? Learn at this Maker Monday! Please register.

Tuesday, March 19 (10:30-11:30 a.m.) Tablet Tuesday User Group – This group will share tips and tricks with each other about using iPads and Android Tablets. Kindle Fire users welcome! Please bring your devices. Please register.

Tuesday, March 19 (4-7 p.m.) Do the Right Thing: Volunteer! – Westlake Porter Public Library is partnering with Westlake’s Community Services Department for a community volunteer fair. Whether you’re interested in developing new skills or want to give back using your expertise, you’ll be able to discuss a variety of short and long term opportunities with many local organizations. Unsure of what kind of volunteer projects or roles to look for? Come to our special program at 5 p.m. and learn more. The Greater Cleveland Theatrical Volunteer Players will present skits you are sure to enjoy. We will also be accepting donations of non-perishable unexpired items for the Westlake Food Pantry.

Wednesday, March 20 (3:45-5 p.m.) Tween Scene – Drop in after school to play board games and video games with your friends. Snacks will be provided. For students in grades 5-6. No registration required.

Thursday, March 21 (Noon-1:30 p.m.) Small Business Lunch & Learn: Marketing Basics – Getting and keeping customers is the most important and difficult task facing any business. Wise allocation of resources is essential. Learn general marketing principles and terminology. Please register.

Thursday, March 21 – Preschool session (6:30 p.m.) and Friday, March 22 – Preschool session (9:30 a.m.) and Toddler Session (11:30 a.m.) Connecting for Kids’ Teach Me to Play^SM – A play-based program for families and their children (Toddler: ages 18 months-2 years and Preschool: ages 3-6 years) who are struggling in an area of development. Diverse opportunities for learning are provided, with an emphasis on facilitating communication, practicing social interactions and responding to behaviors in a positive way. Each themed session offers a variety of engaging individual, small and whole group activities. The staff coaches families, demonstrates and suggests strategies, responds to questions and provides resources. The program is led by an experienced Early Intervention Specialist and Speech-Language Pathologist. Friday, March 22 (1-2:30 p.m.) Author Visit with Zeyn Joukhadar – Join us in welcoming author Zeyn Joukhadar for a presentation on his book The Map of Salt and Stars, a sweeping tale told through the eyes of Nour, a young Syrian American girl whose family returns to the Middle East after the death of her father. Nour’s story is mirrored in a tale her father used to tell her as a child about Rawiya, a twelfth-century girl who disguised herself as a boy in order to apprentice herself to a famous mapmaker. There will be copies of Zeyn’s book available for purchase afterwards. Please register

Saturday, March 23 (2-4 p.m.) Carry Out Crafts – Stop by the Youth Services Department to see what our featured craft is this afternoon. We have all the supplies you’ll need to create something fantastic! No registration required.

Wednesday, March 27 (2 p.m.) Wednesday Afternoon Book Discussion – The March selection is The Bookshop at Water’s End by Patti Callahan Henry.
