Westlake Safety Fair Celebrates Community Wellness

The City of Westlake and University Hospitals St. John Medical Center hosted its annual Community Safety and Wellness Fair on Saturday, May 18, at the Westlake Recreation Center.

The annual free event offered attractions and activities for families looking to live a safer and healthier lifestyle. The fair featured ten different health screenings, a touch-a-truck attraction, and more than 70 exhibitors. Free bike helmets were also given to kids.

“Health and safety are important aspects to ensuring happy families and communities,” said Westlake Mayor Dennis M. Clough. “We’re happy to partner with UH St. John Medical Center in offering this free fair to the community.

Fair attendees also had the opportunity to support the local community through the Vitalant Blood Drive, hair donations at the Wigs for Kids Cut-a-Thon, and non-perishable food items to the Westlake Food Pantry. Donors to the Food Pantry received a “Community Health and Safety Fair Spring into Health” t-shirt sponsored by Legacy Church.

: UH St. John President, Rob David, spearheaded the fair-opening Honor Guard ceremonies.

An Honor Guard featuring active service members, law enforcement, and veterans presented the flag at 10:15 a.m. in observance of Armed Forces Day.

Parking for the fair was available at Westlake High School and attendees hopped aboard Lolly the Trolley for a quick ride to the fair.

Fair Highlights

More than 70 exhibitors were on hand to provide safety and wellness information. UH St. John Community Outreach Nurses and other health professionals conducted health and cancer screenings and answered questions raised by the giant inflatables (brain and heart).

A Touch-a-Truck, with numerous safety vehicles and equipment on display along with Cleveland Browns Chomps, Elmo and Westlake’s Safety Pup. Kids enjoyed the Teddy Bear First Aid Clinic, learned about germs from the UH Nurse Germs, bounced their way through the inflatable bounce house and danced to the musical entertainment by DJ Eazy. Andy the talking LifeCare Ambulance, working and service dogs, fire extinguisher use, and distracted driving and binge drinking simulations were offered.
