June Events at Westlake Porter Public Library

Following is Westlake Porter Public Library’s June, 2019 calendar of events:

Saturday, June 1 (10 a.m.-Noon) Big Wheels – Get – up close and personal with all kinds of vehicles and meet the men and women who drive them! This all-ages program will take place rain or shine in the back parking lot. All ages. No registration required.

Saturday, June 1 (3:30-5 p.m.) STEAMMaker Lab: LEGO Build Challenge – Draw a Lego Challenge Card from the deck and complete the challenge. Complete as many challenges as time allows. Grades 3-5. Registration begins May 25.

Sunday, June 2 (2-3 p.m.) American Girl Doll Club: McKenna Brooks – McKenna Brooks is a 4th grader from Queen Anne Hill in Seattle, Washington who is skilled in gymnastics but struggles with her school work. We will play games and make a theme related craft. Ages 6-11. Registration begins May 26.

Tuesdays, June 4, 11, 18 and 25 (4-4:45 p.m.) Code Club: Java – This 10-week course for grades 5-6 will teach the basics of Java, one of the most popular programming languages. Space is limited for each weekly session. Please try to attend all 10 sessions. Registration begins a week before each session.

Wednesdays, June 5, 12, 19 and 26 (10:15 & 11 a.m.) Let’s Sing and Dance! – Sing and move to the music with Miss Nancy! For children ages 2-6 with a caregiver. Please arrive early to receive a ticket.

Wednesday, June 5 (1-2:30 p.m.) Cuyahoga West Genealogy Society Help Session – Please join the genealogy group for an informal walk-in help session. Please bring pedigree or family group sheets to aid the volunteers in helping you.

Wednesdays, June 5, 12, 19 and 26 (4-5:30 p.m.) and Thursdays, June 6, 13, 20 and 27 (6:30-8 p.m.) Bow Wow Books – Stop by Youth Services to sign up for a 10-minute reading time with a reading therapy dog. Registration begins Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. and Thursday at 6 p.m.

Wednesday, June 5 (6-8:30 p.m.) CPR – CPR and AED certification for adult, child, and infant. Instruction by certified instructor/Paramedic Ken Hehnen. Must be 13 years of age. Please register.

Wednesday, June 5 (6:30-8:30 p.m.) Horror Film Club – Calling all horror film fans: Join us for another creepy classic from the vault…if you dare! New members are always welcome, but children under 13 should be accompanied by an adult. Please register.

Thursday, June 6 (1-7 p.m.) American Red Cross Bloodmobile

Thursdays, June 6, 13 and 20 (4-5 p.m.) Code Club! – Learn how to build an app, design a video game, and change the world through code! Grades 3-4. Registration begins one week before each session.

Thursdays, June 6 and 27 (7-8:30 p.m.) Calling Crafters – Summer Flowers – If you are an adult crafter, or like making crafts, this class is for you. During this session you will learn about the FREE crafting resources available through the library. Our instructor will take you through step-by-step directions. All materials provided. You will make a paper flower bouquet to take home. Registration required, must be 18+.

Friday, June 7 (10-10:45 a.m.) Come Play With Me! – Open playtime with age-appropriate toys. For children ages 2-5 with a caring adult. Siblings welcome! No registration required.

Fridays, June 7, 14, 21 and 28 (2-4 p.m.) Movies @ Your Library – Enjoy a feature-length newly released DVD or favorite family classic! Contact the Youth Services Department for specific titles. No registration required.

Friday, June 7 (4-5 p.m.) Got Science? – Explore the world of plants! Observe how plants grow and make your own greenhouse to take home. Grades 1 and 2. Registration begins May 31.

Saturday, June 8 (2-3 p.m.) Brick Builders – Love those bricks? Bring your ideas and imagination! Lego® and Duplo® bricks provided. For ages 3-12. No registration required.

Sundays, June 9 and 30 (2-4 p.m.) Chess Club – Hone your chess skills or learn how to play the game. Recommended for ages 6+, but all ages are welcome. If you have a chess set, please bring it with you. No registration necessary.

Sundays, June 9-July 28 (2:30-4 p.m.) American Sign Language Basics – If you ever wanted to learn American Sign Language, now is your chance! Join us for 8 drop-in sessions on Sundays. Instructor June Pritchard will teach the basics of this visual, gestural language used most often by the hearing impaired. Ages 16 and up. No registration required.

Monday, June 10 (1-1:30 p.m.) Yoga Time! – This is a perfect way to introduce yoga and practice simple poses. Remember to wear comfortable clothing and bring a towel or yoga mat. Ages 3 and up with a caregiver. No registration necessary. Namaste!

Monday, June 10 (6:30-8 p.m.) Sibling Revelry Book Club – Books are on tap at Sibling Revelry! Sit back, grab a brew, and join us for the Sibling Revelry Book Club. The discussion will be held in the party room at Sibling Revelry Brewery at 29305 Clemens Rd in Westlake. June’s title is The Museum of Modern Love by Heather Rose. eBooks and eAudiobooks are available through Hoopla Digital at theclub.hoopladigital.com. Outside food and non-alcoholic beverages are welcome. Please no outside alcohol.

Tuesday, June 11 (1-3 p.m.) Career: Create Cover Letters That Get Noticed – Learn about letter writing techniques for cover letters and follow-up letters. Discover keywords that may be used to screen candidates in or out. Learn what employers are looking for in the letters they receive and the importance of your writing style to get you noticed. No registration required.

Tuesday, June 11 (7-8:30 p.m.) Tuesday Evening Book Discussion – In May we’ll discuss An American Marriage by Tayari Jones.

Tuesday, June 11 (7-8:45 p.m.) Eliot Ness’ Cleveland – Travel back to the time of bootleggers, beer, and unsolved crimes. This program will discuss the role of Eliot Ness during his controversial tenure as Cleveland’s Safety Director from 1935-1942. Please register.

Wednesday, June 12 (3-4:30 p.m.) Boredom Busters! – Are you bored? Drop by the Storytime Room and join in the fun! We will have different activities available each month. All ages welcome! No registration necessary.

Thursday, June 12 (2-3:30 p.m.) Great Decisions Discussion Program on World Affairs – Discuss critical global issues facing America today. At the beginning of each month a copy of the article may be picked up at the Ask Us Desk. Please read prior to the meeting. Please register.

Thursdays, June 13, 20 and 27 (2-3:30 p.m.) Teen Crafts – Bring out your creativity every Thursday throughout the summer! Drop-in for a new craft each week. While supplies last. No registration necessary.

Thursday, June 13 (7-8 p.m.) Lifebanc: Continuing the Legacy – Come learn what it really means to be an organ, eye, and tissue donor. A donor family and a transplant recipient will share their stories. Please register.

Thursday, June 13 (7-7:30 p.m.) Parachute Play – Get ready to jump and move with music, stories and the parachute. Bring your energy, mom, dad, or other caregiver to Parachute Play! For children ages 4-6. Registration begins June 6.

Friday, June 14 (10:30-11:15 a.m.) Adaptive Dance with Inspirations Dance Academy – Dance moves are taught in many different ways incorporating visual tools and sensory techniques to help each participant learn how their body best responds to dance while in a positive and accepting environment. Led by a physical therapist and lifelong dancer, this program is developed specifically for children with special needs. Ages 3-8. Siblings and typical peers are welcome. Registration begins June 7.

Friday, June 14 (11-11:45 a.m.) Unicorn Party – Do you love rainbows, sparkles and unicorns? We do too! Join us as we celebrate the wonder of unicorns with stories, games and crafts! For children age 3-6 with a caregiver. Registration begins June 7.

Saturday, June 15 (11 a.m.-1 p.m.) Escape Artists Writers Group – This group meets monthly to provide guidance, encouragement, inspiration and feedback for those looking to improve their writing skills. No registration necessary.

Saturday, June 15 (2-3 p.m.) Afternoon Jazz: The Biasella Trio – Come enjoy the sounds of The Biasella Trio! Formed in 2008, this jazz trio performs instrumental jazz standards from the 40’s through the 60’s. The group’s lineup currently features founder and drummer Paul Biasella, Tom Jares on guitar and Rick Wager on bass. Please register.

Saturday, June 15 (2-4 p.m.) Carry Out Crafts – Stop by the Youth Services Department to see what our featured craft is this afternoon. We have all the supplies you’ll need to create something fantastic! No registration required.

Saturday, June 15 (3-5 p.m.) Anime Club – A great club for anime and manga lovers! All otakus and newbies are welcome! Grades 7 to adult. No registration required.

Monday, June 17 (10-10:30 a.m.) Fancy Nancy Ballet Story Time – Young ballerinas ages 3-5 will love this ballet story! After the story they’ll learn some basic ballet positions and steps. Presented by Baldwin Wallace Community Arts School. Registration begins June 10. Please register every person attending the program, not just the child participating.

Monday, June 17 (7-8:30 p.m.) Investors’ Interest Group: How to Select Divident Paying Stocks – Former U.S. Department of the Treasury senior economist, and current Baldwin Wallace investments professor, Dr. Kevin Jacques talks about how to select dividend paying stocks. Particular attention is paid to both academic research and practical financial approaches to making dividend paying stocks part of your portfolio. Selected dividend paying stocks will be discussed. Monday, June 17 (7-8:45 p.m.) Cleveland is SO Gay: An Image History of LGBTQ Activism – Clevelanders bravely went to battle in their quest for equal rights, fighting racism, sexism, homophobia, and transphobia. Join Dr. Ken Schneck as he displays images from his work LGBTQ Cleveland: Images of Modern America highlighting the heroes and villains that have become part of the fabric of Cleveland’s LGBTQ history. Monday, June 17 (7-8:30 p.m.) Maker Monday: All About Drones – Learn all about drones, remote- controlled quadcopters sometimes with cameras attached, and even get to fly your own (if the weather cooperates)! Please register.

Tuesday, June 18 (Grades 1-3: 10-11:30 a.m. and Grades 4-6: 1-2:30 p.m.) Pottery Play with Quill Studio – Make your own unique pottery in this hands-on workshop with Quill Pottery of Bay Village. Registration begins June 11.

Tuesday, June 18 (10:30-11:30 a.m.) Tablet Tuesday User Group – This group will share tips and tricks with each other about using iPads and Android Tablets. Kindle Fire users welcome! Please bring your devices. Please register.

Tuesday, June 18 (3-4 p.m.) Pottery Play with Quill Studio – Work with clay to make your own unique pottery in this hands-on workshop with Quill Pottery of Bay Village. Grades 7-12. Registration begins June 11.

Tuesday, June 18 (7-8 p.m.) Wonders of Weather – Meteorologist Jon Loufman discusses weather phenomena and what we can expect this summer. All ages welcome. Registration begins June 1.

Wednesday, June 19 (6:30-8:45 p.m.) Cuyahoga West Genealogical Society – Tom Neel, Director of the Ohio Genealogical Society Library in Bellville, Ohio, will present Until Death Do Us Part: An Examination of Marriage and Divorce Records of the 1800s.

Wednesday, June 19 (7-8 p.m.) Teen Taste Test: Ice Cream Edition! – Sample a variety of delicious ice creams in this blind taste test! We’ll determine fan favorites, and rate each on look, taste, and texture. Please Note: May not be suitable for individuals with allergies. Grades 7-12. Registration begins June 12.

Thursday, June 20 (10-11 a.m.) Staying Safe Online – Learn some simple best-practices to avoid scam emails, use strong passwords, and keep your computer safe. Please register.

Thursday, June 20 (Noon-1:30 p.m.) Small Business Lunch & Learn: Integrating Email Marketing with Social Media – Maximize the impact of your email marketing campaign. Email marketing is one aspect of social media marketing that is often overlooked. In this workshop we explore effective ways to use email marketing WITH your social media marketing strategy. Your email can serve as a launch point for content you want to share across platforms. Please register.

Friday, June 21 (9:30-10 a.m.) My First Summer – Celebrate your baby’s first summer with a fingerprint flowerpot craft. For babies age 0-18 months with a caregiver. Registration begins June 14.

Friday, June 21 (4-4:45 p.m.) Fun Science Friday: The Sun and the Seasons – Hopefully the sun will be shining as learn about our closest star and what makes the seasons change. Ages 4-6. Registration begins June 14.

Saturday, June 22 (10:30 -11:30 a.m.) Pokemon Fun! – A fun morning of Pokemon themed play, prizes, and crafts! Ages 6-11. No registration required.

Saturday, June 22 (2-2:45 p.m.) Porter Playtime Marching Band – Hip, Hip, Parade! Come and join our Porter Playtime Marching Band! No experience necessary. All instruments provided! Ages 4-6. Registration begins June 15.

Sunday, June 23 (3-4 p.m.) Art Smarts: Paul Klee – Explore works of a well-known artist and then use what you’ve seen to create an art piece of your own! Grades 3-6. Registration begins June 16.

Monday, June 24 (2-3 p.m.) Coding for Kids – Learn computer programming by designing video games that can be shared and played with friends! Grades 3-6. Registration begins June 17.

Monday, June 24 (3-4 p.m.) Robotics for Kids – Pair up to create, program, and animate robots using LEGO bricks then experiment with other kids in friendly competitions. Grades 3-6. Registration begins June 17.

Monday, June 24 (3-4 p.m.) Breakout: Totally Radical 80s – Similar to an escape room, this breakout challenge is going to test your ability to work together to solve all the clues that’ll keep you and your group from getting stuck in the 80s! Can you break out?! Grades 7-12. Registration begins June 17.

Tuesday, June 25 (1:30-3 p.m.) Medicare-OSHIIP – Do you need accurate, unbiased information about Medicare? Attend a presentation from the Ohio Senior Health Insurance Information Program (OSHIIP) to learn the “ins and outs” of Medicare. OSHIIP is a free service through the Ohio Department of Insurance and provides objective information to people of any age on Medicare. OSHIIP does not sell insurance. Registration begins June 1.

Tuesday, June 25 (6:30-8:30 p.m.) Herbal Medicine – This class will cover what herbs to take for specific health concerns. Learn about essential oils and how to make your specific blends. Acquire skills on making herbal medicines, salves, and tinctures from your own garden. Registration begins June 1.

Tuesday, June 25 (7-7:30 p.m.) Bedtime Stories: Under the Stars – Put on your pajamas and join Mrs. K as we unwind at the end of the day. Relax with quiet stories, songs, fingerplays, and other activities to help us get ready for bedtime. Ages 4-6. Siblings welcome. No registration required.

Wednesday, June 26 (2 p.m.) Wednesday Afternoon Book Discussion – The June selection is In Pieces by Sally Field.

Friday, June 28 (10 a.m.-Noon) Fiber Fanatics – A time for needlecrafters to share, solve problems, and show off.

Saturday, June 29 (10:30-11 a.m.) Mother Goose On the Loose! – An interactive storytime featuring simple books, rhymes, songs and movement. For ages birth-3 years old with a caregiver. No registration required.

Saturday, June 29 (3:30-5 p.m.) STEAMMaker Lab – Learn about the properties of flight and create flying machines to take home. Grades 3-5. Registration begins June 22.

Sunday, June 30 (2-3 p.m.) American Girl Club – We will enjoy a light picnic with our dolls before engaging in outdoor picnic games and activities on the side lawn. Ages 6-11. Registration begins June 23.
