Westlake Police responded to a report of a drug overdose at the Red Roof Inn on May 21 at 9:30 p.m., but the victim was DOA.
On 5/21/19 at approx. 9:30PM officers responded to the Red Roof Inn on Clemens for a reported drug overdose. A 52yo from Plymouth, OH was found unresponsive in the room. Officers administered Narcan, performed CPR and attached an AED to attempt to revive him. The victim was transported to the hospital by Westlake Fire but unfortunately he passed away. Officers and detectives interviewed the other male in the room after evidence of drug use was observed. The witness male was arrested for an outstanding felony drug warrant from Lake County. Investigators are working with the Cuyahoga County Coroner’s Office to confirm toxicology reports and determine where the victim obtained the narcotics.
Suspected Drug Smuggled into Jail
On 5/20/19 at approx. 8:45PM an officer stopped a vehicle on I90 at Bradley for a moving violation. Criminal indicators were observed and a WPD K9 alerted to the vehicle. The female passenger was also found to have 2 active arrest warrants. Investigation revealed that the female passenger, a 33yo from Cleveland, was in possession of a pipe she admitted she used to smoke crack cocaine. The female was arrested and the male was sent on his way. It was later discovered that the female prisoner had smuggled suspected cocaine into the jail. She was charged with felony conveyance of contraband into a detention facility as well as possession of cocaine and drug paraphernalia. Her warrants were confirmed through North Ridgeville PD and Macedonia PD.
Scam of the Week
On 5/17/19 an officer took a report from the manager of a spa on Detroit Rd regarding a scam. On the 16th, the manager received a phone call from someone purporting to be a representative from The Ohio Edison Electric Company. The supposed rep threatened that the power to the business would be cut off within 30 minutes if a payment to their bill was not made. Of course, since the payment was due immediately, only cash would be acceptable. The thief talked the manager into purchasing Green Dot Money cards for over $400. The numbers on the cards were read to the fraudster over the phone to “pay” the bill. The manager soon realized that the phone call and electric bill were a hoax.
Fight at Cheesecake Factory
On 5/19/19 at approx. 8:15PM officers responded to a report of an altercation in progress at the Cheesecake Factory at Crocker Park. Evidently 2 males were flipping over tables as the dispute escalated. When officers arrived, the males were already separated but remained uncooperative with the police. Both were arrested during the investigation. A 32yo Westlake resident was arrested for obstruction. A 26yo North Royalton resident was taken into custody for obstruction as well as assaulting a police officer after he pushed an officer on scene.
Passed Behind the Wheel
On 5/21/19 at about 1pm a caller on Arthur Ave reported that there was a vehicle parked on the lawn between his and his neighbor’s house. That is alarming enough but the operator was slumped over the steering wheel and the engine was still running. Officers arrived and found that the 33yo male operator was turning blue. The fire department administered Narcan and the male regained consciousness. He admitted he had been snorting heroin. Evidence showed that he drove backward through several yards, struck a utility pole, and ended up as found in the residential yard. The male was transported to the hospital and was cited with operating a vehicle while under the influence of drugs, failure to control, and seatbelt.
Menacing by Stalking
On 5/17/19 at approx. 8AM a female came to the WPD to report that her ex-boyfriend was at her apartment and would not leave. Officers responded to the apartment but did not locate the male, who also had an active warrant out of Elyria PD. A trespassing report was taken at that time. Later that night, at about 10PM, the female called WPD again to report that the ex was trying to get into her apartment building. Officers located the male riding a bicycle nearby. The male would not listen to the officers commands to stop and a short foot pursuit ensued. The 50yo, who listed the ex girlfriend’s Westlake address as his, was soon taken into custody. He was charged with menacing by stalking as well as obstruction. A protection order was requested through Rocky River Court.
Car Break-Ins
Between 5/14/19 and 5/18/19 several unlocked vehicles were entered in the Queen Annes Gate Neighborhood. Vehicles were entered on Queen Annes, Kingsway, and Prince Charles. Items taken include purses, credit cards, cash and misc clothes. Investigators are following up on leads.
On 5/20/19 at approx. 7AM officers responded to a business on Clemens Rd on a complaint of a stolen vehicle. The complainant reported that sometime over the weekend, their Ford Transit van was taken from the parking lot of the business. There was broken glass found in the area where the van had been parked. The vehicle was entered as stolen.
Begging for a Break
On 5/23/19 at approx. 7:40PM officers stopped a vehicle in the area of the Double Tree Hotel on Crocker Rd for an expired plate. The driver, who jumped out of the vehicle “begging” for a break, was found to be in possession of drug paraphernalia. To make matters worse for him, he had 3 outstanding warrants and was found to be driving under suspension. Suspected methamphetamine was also located in the vehicle. The 31yo from Elyria was charged with felony possession of meth along with traffic charges and misdemeanor drug paraphernalia.
