Avon Plans Roundabout for Nagel-Detroit Intersection

Avon City Councilperson Tammy Holtzmeier reports that a roundabout will be coming to the Detroit-Nagel Road intersection.

As you may have heard, Avon is planning to open a new roundabout.

The Detroit/Nagel Roundabout is planned for construction in 2022. Avon officials are securing a major grant from ODOT to cover 57% of the $5.1m project. Council recently reappropriated funds for project engineering to move the roundabout forward.

Similar in design to the Mills/SR 83 roundabout, which drivers are accustomed to navigating, the Detroit/Nagel roundabout will be built with additional features including dedicated right-turn lanes and wide island pedestrian crosswalks.

Viewable in the accompanying designs, two approaches will have one single lane similar to the Mills Rd roundabout (“A”). The other two approaches will have separate dedicated right-turn lanes & through lanes (“B”).

The roundabout represents just one of the upcoming road infrastructure upgrades in the works for Avon over the next few years to lessen traffic woes.

Key Project Components:

Concrete curbs and gutters along roads.
Upgraded street lighting for better night visibility.
Road intentionally curved out to slow traffic around the circle.
Newly installed sidewalks connecting to existing sidewalks.
Traffic circle located closer to Drug Mart property. Construction includes much needed graded build-up in area surrounding that will exceed safety standards.
Plenty of signage around the roundabout to direct motorists.
Double crosswalks installed in each approach. Intentionally designed further away from the traffic circle, where crossing distance is narrower.
Each crosswalk w/ flashing crossing lights, plus a 10-12 foot wide crossing island allowing pedestrians to safely pause for oncoming traffic before completing cross.
Raised crossing islands, shaped like a stretched triangle, are wide enough to hold multiple bicycles & pedestrians at once.
Landscaping in the circle center, like Mills, which encourages motorists to slow by intentionally blocking see-through.
Safety forces & ambulance/fire truck equipment to readily navigate.
