Future Westlake Leaders

Twenty-three students from Lee Burneson and Westlake High School participated in the Westshore Young Leaders Leadership Conference last month. These students were selected by school staff members for their leadership potential.

The event was held at the Westlake Recreation Center, where leadership training was provided by the professional staff of the Effective Leadership Academy (ELA). The annual program is sponsored and funded by the Westshore Enforcement Bureau. Westlake PD School Resource Officers assist with many of the events for the kids.

Students from the six Westshore school districts of Westlake, Bay Village, Rocky River, North Olmsted, Fairview Park and Lakewood gathered for training designed to teach leadership skills development through activities within the school environment aimed at the reduction of alcohol and illicit drug use among teens. Presentations were made by the McKeon Educational Group and the McIntyre Center.

Attendees of the leadership conference learned problem solving skills through interactive games and competitions. Eighty-one students attended the training from the six Westshore schools. Students who attended also receive volunteer service hours for their participation.
