Mercy Health Celebrates Breast Cancer Awareness

Event  supports Breast Cancer survivors 

Mercy Health – Lorain is adding a little sparkle to the prominent pink that will undoubtedly be on display during October, also known as Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The health system hosted a Bra Bedazzling Celebration on Monday, October 17th from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Mercy Health – Cancer Center, located at 41201 Schadden Road in Elyria. The event honors breast cancer survivors and women currently undergoing treatment.

“These women are coming through a very difficult experience – one that impacts not only their bodies, but also their mind and spirit. So, this event isn’t as much about awareness – they’re already far too familiar with this life-changing disease. It’s more about promoting healing by providing them a break from the seriousness and an opportunity that allows them to let go – be silly and have fun,” said Dr. Mita Patel, a breast surgical oncologist at Mercy Health – Lorain. 

Event organizers hope the event will also give breast cancer survivors some time to connect and reflect with others who have gone through the same experience. 

Participants were encouraged to bring their own bra, new or used – any color or style could be used. Sequins, ribbons, glitter, and bows were among the items guests had on hand to help bling out their bras. Light refreshments were also served at the event. 

Breast cancer is the second most common cancer among women in the United States, with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reporting the diagnosis of about 264,000 cases in women and 2,400 cases in men annually.
