40-Plus Years of Service! Thank You, Penny Evans!

Penny Evans (second from left) with her family.

Penny Evans, Manager of Volunteer Services, recently retired from UH St John Medical Center. Her career started in 1982.

She was recognized on July 27 at a luncheon with some friends, administrative staff and most of her family in attendance. UH SJMC COO Jonathan Sague personally thanked her for her service and commitment to UH SJMC.

“She was a very energetic, charismatic and thoughtful leader who was proud of her teams, which included the gift shop and volunteer services. She put her heart and soul into what she did everyday. We will miss her, but we are happy for her in this opportunity to enjoy the next part of her life,” said Sague.

A reception followed in the Terrace View Cafe where many volunteers and co-workers stopped by to extend their congratulations and well wishes to Penny.

Penny was born in Akron as the youngest of four daughters (Patty, Priscilla-deceased, and Peggy) born to Clara and Charles Pitman. She graduated from Firestone High School and worked as a Nursing Unit Secretary at Akron Children’s Hospital prior to moving to the Cleveland area. She obtained her Associate of Liberal Arts degree from Lorain County Community College.

Penny started her employment at St. John West Shore Hospital in 1982. She worked in Human Resources, Transcription and on 3 South as a unit secretary prior to becoming the Coordinator of Volunteer Services.

Penny displayed dedication and commitment to the hospital and always made time to listen to the concerns of the many volunteers who thought she was a special friend and “good boss”.

Penny resides in North Ridgeville with Scott, her husband of nearly 42 years, and their Airedale, Kezia. They can often be seen walking the neighborhood with Kezia.

They are the proud parents of two children: Brian, who is serving a military career in the US Navy, and Lauren, a nurse midwife and mother of their two granddaughters (Nora -5 and Emmy-3). Lauren and her spouse, Shane Hess, reside with their girls in Wake Forest, SC. Brian and his wife, Jenny, live in Laurel, MD, and are expecting their first child in 2024. Penny and Scott are thrilled with the news of having another grandchild.

Penny enjoys her grandchildren, reading and church activities. Perhaps Penny will have time to rekindle her interest in golf now that she has retired. Best wishes, Penny!
