The end of the year is almost here, have you come in for your routine dental check up and cleaning yet? Coming in for your dental check up and cleaning can help make sure not only your mouth is healthy, but also your overall health. Check ups are necessary to prevent tooth decay, gum disease, and ensure there is nothing abnormal going on.
Catching anything in its early stages whether it be gum disease, cavities, or oral pathologies can ensure better chance of success with treatment. Treating tooth decay when it is smaller helps prevent chances of needing root canals. Treating gum disease in early stages can help maintain bone support around teeth and prevent tooth loss.
When you come in for a dental cleaning, I check to make sure all tissues are looking healthy. It is important to make sure you are getting your mouth checked for oral cancer. Along with oral cancer we can usually see indications of diabetes and vitamin deficiencies.
At your bi-annual check up I will also check your TMJ joint and bite. Here is a brief summary of things that are checked:
- Head and Neck Exam
- TMJ, Face, Neck, Lymph Nodes
- Clinical Dental Exam
- Gums, Oral Tissue, Tongue, Bite, Tooth Decay, Broken Teeth, Damaged fillings, X-rays, Bite
Along with your checkup, you will also get a dental cleaning. During your dental cleaning, here is a brief summary of what you can expect:
- Removing plaque and tartar
- Polishing teeth
- Flossing your teeth
- Going over oral hygiene instructions at home (brushing and flossing techniques)
