Learning for Life—a lecture series that has just reached its tenth year in production—offered yet another outstanding session on Wednesday, November 12th at Tri-C’s Westshore campus located on Clemens Rd. in Westlake. The lectures are based on a theme for that semester and the subject of “Health and Wellness” has become a very popular one as people seek to learn more about good health habits.
Christopher Faciana, Program Director of Sports and Exercise Studies at East and Western Campuses delivered the presentation complete with demonstrations and opportunities for audience participation. He provided valuable info and made the audience aware of the importance of movement in our everyday lives and explained how lack of physical movement affects us not only physically but psychological as well. Lack of motivation and depression can be common side effects of not staying active—but Chris talked about starting slowly with regular walking and doing light resistance exercises, explaining that all movement adds up to better health. Approximately 70 people were in the audience that was comprised of students, faculty and staff and members of the community.
After the presentation, Chris addressed a number of questions from the audience and it was clear that attendees found the time to be valuable. Several asked for him to come back and do a “Part II” presentation which we look forward to
Previous lectures from the current series included “Reducing Financial Vulnerability” which provided information on becoming aware of financial fraud and scams. “The Effects of Inadequate Sleep” was another popular topic as so many struggle to gain sufficient sleep. Attendees discovered ways to increase the likelihood of gaining a good night’s rest as a way to avoid the many ill effect of lack of sleep.
The new series will begin with “Unemployment and Job Creation Strategies” and will be held on Wednesday, February 11th beginning at noon and ending around 1:15 pm. These lectures are completely free and open to the public—everyone is invited to attend and encouraged to bring a friend of two! It’s a great way to meet new people and to learn something new.
