UH SJMC Legacy Award Honors Gwen Jones

The Legacy Award is a brand new initiative to celebrate an outstanding staff member who embraces and embodies the legacy of the founders of UH St. John Medical Center.

Being the only Catholic hospital in the UH health system, UH St. John Medical Center enjoys two strands of legacy and mission which intertwine to form one beautiful tradition.

The Sisters of Charity of St. Augustine, who arrived in Northeast Ohio in the early 1850s, were pioneers in the realm of public health care.

Their motto was and is “In all things, charity.”

University Hospitals traces its roots to 1866 when leaders in business, medicine and religion came together to address the pressing health needs of the community.

As the health system was emerging, the motto that inspired countless caregivers to serve their community was, “The neediest will be the worthiest.”

The 2025 Legacy Award was presented to Gwen Jones, a member of our Environmental Services team, who constantly treats the neediest as the worthiest and does so in the spirit of charity.

Gwen is well loved and respected among her peers at the hospital, and was celebrated by the other nominees at the awards ceremony this morning.
