The Carolyn L. Farrell Foundation for Brain Health is a nonprofit organization based in Westlake, dedicated to empowering, engaging, and educating individuals living with dementia and other brain health conditions, as well as their care partners and families. Founded in 2011 by Dr. Charles “Charlie” Farrell and his daughter Rev. Katie Norris, the foundation was inspired by their experience caring for Carolyn L. Farrell, who lived with Lewy Body dementia. Through that journey, they recognized the need for meaningful, activity based community support that honors dignity, creativity, and connection.
At the core of the foundation’s mission is the belief that people living with dementia can continue to create, imagine, and thrive when provided with accessible, engaging opportunities. The foundation’s signature arts enrichment and wellness programs use multi sensory experiences such as visual art, music, movement, storytelling, and creative expression to stimulate cognition, encourage social interaction, and reduce isolation. Programs are offered at no cost and are designed to support both participants and their care partners in a welcoming, inclusive environment.
In addition to its arts based programming, the foundation offers SHARE for Dementia, an innovative care planning program for individuals in the early stages of dementia and their families. Licensed through Benjamin Rose Institute – SHARE focuses on empowerment, education, and proactive planning, helping families make informed decisions while emphasizing quality of life. The foundation also hosts community activities such as Walk & Roll gatherings, seasonal events, and Mindfulness Through the Arts(TM) sessions that foster enrichment opportunities for the care partner.
Volunteers play a vital role in advancing the foundation’s mission. The Carolyn L. Farrell Foundation welcomes volunteers to assist with program facilitation, community outreach, fundraising events, and administrative support. Artists, Musicians, and creatives of all disciplines are especially encouraged to share their talents in programs. Volunteers receive training and are asked to commit regularly so participants can build meaningful, consistent relationships.
If you are passionate about brain health, the arts, and strengthening community connections, consider volunteering with the Carolyn L. Farrell Foundation. Your time and talents can make a lasting difference in the lives of individuals living with dementia and those who care for them.
