Avon Police Officers Honored for Heroic Service

Four City of Avon Police Officers were honored at the Avon City Council Meeting last week for heroic service.

Officer Justin Murray and Officer Matt Charlton received life saving awards as a result of their actions in the same incident.

Officer Lynden Ody and Officer Nick Rennette received police commendation awards for their actions at two separate incidents.

Officers Charlton and Murray

On July 25, Officer Charlton was flagged down by a passing motorist who reported that a female was sitting on the State Route 83 overpass above Interstate 90. Upon arrival, Officer Charlton located a juvenile female sitting on the outside edge of the bridge wall with her feet hanging over the interstate approximately 27 feet below. Officer Murray arrived moments later, and together the officers calmly engaged the juvenile in conversation while working to build rapport and encourage her to return to safety.

Despite their efforts, the juvenile moved closer to the edge, making a threat to her life immediate. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, Officers Charlton and Murray seized the opportunity to safely grab her and pull her back over the wall, preventing what could have been a tragic loss of life.

“Through their courage, compassion, sound judgment, and exceptional teamwork, Officers Charlton and Murray demonstrated the highest ideals of the Avon Police Department and an unwavering commitment to protecting others,” reports Avon Police Chief Daniel Fischbach.

Patrolman Lynden Ody

On February 17, 2025 Officer Ody responded to a Domestic Disturbance at 39140 Detroit Road, and upon arrival at the residence encountered a male with a significant injury to his left arm with three large lacerations from the wrist to the elbow. He recognized the severity of the incident and without hesitation applied a tourniquet to stop the bleeding before the arrival of EMS.

“You handled the incident with a high degree of professionalism, self-initiative, proficiency, and superior effort in assisting the male with the severe injury. Your dedication, calm demeanor, and commitment were evident throughout the incident. Your actions are a credit to yourself and the Avon Police Department,” says Chief Fischbach.

Patrolman Nicholas Rennette

On April 8, 2024 Officer Rennette responded to the Salvation Army, 1449 Middle Street, to a report of an unresponsive male who was suffering from a cardiac arrest. He recognized the severity of the incident and without hesitation applied CPR to the male. He continued to administer CPR and the male was administered NARCAN. The male responded by opening his eyes and breathing without assistance before the arrival of EMS.

“Your dedication, hard work and commitment were evident throughout the incident. Your actions are a credit to yourself and the Avon Police Department,” reports Chief Fischbach.
