Bay High School has Three Students Recognized in 2027 National Merit Scholarship Program

BHS Recognizes One Semifinalist and Two Commended Students

Bay Village City School District is proud to announce that three Bay High School Seniors have been recognized in the 2027 National Merit® Scholarship Program, an annual academic competition for recognition and college undergraduate scholarships. Andrew Kelly has been named a Semifinalist, and Colin Kidik and William Schrock have been named Commended Students.

These students were identified based on their 2025 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) scores.

Andrew Kelly

At Bay High School, Andrew enjoys singing with the Bay High Choraleers, “especially during the holiday season.” He is also a class representative on the Student Council, where he enjoys “brainstorming ways to make school more enjoyable and student-led.” He has also been involved in Bay High’s Future of Democracy program, which trained him to be a poll worker in last year’s November general election. Andrew also plans to work this year’s November general election.

Outside of school, Andrew plays the oboe in the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra, a program he’s been involved with since 2022. He also studies the oboe privately. This past summer, Andrew worked at Gale’s Garden Center in Westlake. In his free time, he enjoys working in his backyard tree garden and doing weekend Lake Erie beach cleanups. Additionally, he loves learning about the natural world and the environment through summer programs and the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Conservation Teen Advisory Council.

Andrew’s favorite subject at Bay High School is Chemistry, although he says he “loves almost every subject at BHS, especially the natural sciences, the language arts and the choral programs.” He intends to pursue a career in the energy industry or something in manufacturing to find more sustainable, reliable ways to manufacture and/or consume energy. He would like to attend The Ohio State University, Purdue University, Princeton University or Northwestern University.

Andrew is the son of Deborah Kelly and Patrick Kelly.

Colin Kidik

At Bay High, Colin is involved with Key Club and The Thirst Project. For the Thirst Project, he is the National Student Leadership Board Chairman, where he leads a cohort of student-leaders from across the nation to develop innovative awareness campaigns in an effort to educate more students about the mission of Thirst Project, which is bringing safe drinking water to places around the world. Also here, we create accessible resources for new clubs to use, so that they can get their fundraising off of the ground. He is also the Thirst Project Water Warrior for Ohio, where he works with clubs across the state to implement Thirst Projects in Key Clubs, ultimately increasing fundraising for the charity within the state. Lastly, he is one of the Ohio Key Club Lieutenant Governors, working with six Key Clubs in the West Cleveland region to increase interconnectedness between Key Clubs and increase membership at each club.

Colin is also a Section Leader in the Bay High Marching Band, where he plays Alto Sax. He is also a member of Bay High Jazz Band, where he plays Bari Sax. He is the immediate past President of Bay High Key Club (of which he is still a member), and he volunteers with Bay High Tech Club.

His favorite subjects fall under the umbrella of science, specifically physics and chemistry. Colin’s career intention is to enter medicine, specifically surgery. Currently, his leading college choice is the University of South Carolina, specifically attending their Honors College.

William Schrock

William enjoys playing golf, card games, watching college football and hanging out with his friends. He is on the Bay High golf team and baseball team, and is a member of Key Club and National Honor Society.

His favorite subjects at Bay High are Physics and Biology, and he intends on studying engineering and eventually attending medical school to become a doctor. His top college choices include Vanderbilt University, the University of Tennessee and The Ohio State University.
