Westlake Porter Public Library’s August Calendar of Events

Following is Westlake Porter Public Library’s August 2025 calendar of events. All programs are subject to change. Please check westlakelibrary.org or follow the library on Facebook and Instagram (@WestlakePorter) for the latest updates.

August 1-31 Suma’s Scavenger Hunt – Pick up Suma’s Scavenger Hunt at the Youth Services Desk during the month of August and use your library skills and eagle eyes to complete the hunt for a small prize. Grades K-6. No registration required.

Friday, August 1 (10-10:45 a.m.) Jesse Jukebox in Concert – Jesse Jukebox and DJ Terkey Sandwich perform an interactive concert where kids can be kids and grown-ups have fun, too! Ages 0-8, families welcome. This program is hosted outside in the Friends Pavilion, please dress accordingly. In case of inclement weather, we will meet in the Porter Room. Please register.

Saturday, August 2 (10-11:30 a.m.) and Tuesday, August 5 (6-7:30 p.m.) Makerspace Foundations: CNC Orientation – Attend an orientation to learn the basics of using the CNC router and become a verified user of the machine. Registration begins July 26.

Saturday, August 2 (2-3 p.m.) Random Acts of Kindness – In this all ages event, Paul Johanni, Sr. will share stories from his decades of experiences with random acts of kindness and teach participants to notice the helpful actions of those around them.

Sunday, August 3 (2-3 p.m.) Come Play With Me – Open playtime for children ages 2-5 with a caring adult. Siblings welcome! No registration required.

Monday, August 4 (9 a.m.-9 p.m.) August Adventures Craft Kit Pick Up – Celebrate August with some fun crafts. Space is limited. Crafts recommended for ages 3-7. Kits are available until Sunday, August 10, unless other arrangements are made. Registration begins July 28.

Tuesday, August 5 (2-3 p.m.) Virtual Author Talk: Jay Falk, “The Bird Book” – Delve into the fascinating world of birds through astonishing photography and clear explanations in Falk’s absorbing global guide, “The Bird Book: The Stories, Science, and History of Birds.” Please register.

Tuesday, August 5 (7–8:30 p.m.) World at War Forum: Guadalcanal – Dog Fight in the Pacific – World at War Forum contributors Steve Pettyjohn and Bob Pence discuss the importance of the battle for Guadalcanal on the war in the Pacific and Japan’s eventual defeat. Please register.

Wednesday, August 6 (10:30-11:15 a.m.) and Thursday, August 7 (1:30-2:15 p.m.) Adapted Storytime – Join us for this storytime designed for children who may not be successful in a typical storytime. Content is geared toward ages 3-7. Registration begins one week before each session.

Wednesday, August 6 (6:30-8:30 p.m.) Horror Film Club – Join us for another creepy classic from the Vault! New members are welcome, but children under 13 must be with an adult. Please register.

Thursday, August 7 (10-10:45 a.m.) Music Time – Sing and learn pre-literacy and development skills while appreciating the joy of music. Presented by Mr. Tim. Ages 3-6, siblings welcome. Registration begins July 31.

Thursday, August 7 (1-7 p.m.) American Red Cross Bloodmobile – Please give blood with the American Red Cross Bloodmobile.

Saturday, August 9 (9 a.m.-Noon) Forest Therapy Walk – Join certified Forest Therapy Guide Catherine Mangan on a forest therapy walk at Bradley Woods Reservation. In Forest Therapy, people are guided with gentle invitations to slow down, allow the senses to open, and experience the environment to deepen the reciprocal relationship between participants and the forest. No pets are allowed on the walks. Please register.

Saturday, August 9 (10-11:30 a.m.) Seed Saving Know How: How to Harvest and Save Seeds from Your Summer Garden – Learn how to harvest the seeds from the garden you planted this spring and summer. All ages welcome. Please register.

Saturdays, August 9 and 30 (10:30-11 a.m.) Family Storytime – Join us for rhymes, songs and play! Ages 2-6 with a caregiver. No registration required.

Sunday, August 10 (2-3 p.m.) Brick Builders – Do you love Legos^©? Then bring your ideas and imagination to Brick Builders! Bricks provided. No registration is required, but room capacity is limited. First come, first served. Ages 5-12.

Mondays, August 11 and September 8 (7-8 p.m.) NEW Meetup Group – Meet with other veg/plant-based- curious individuals to discover new flavors, new foods and more ways to be kind to yourselves and to our earth. This group will meet most months on the second Monday of the month. Various topics will be discussed. No registration required.

Tuesday, August 12 (10-11 a.m.) The Classic Radio Hour: Have Gun, Will Travel (1958) – This month, we’re heading out West with Paladin, the San Francisco gun-for-hire in Have Gun, Will Travel. This Western classic featured a former army officer turned gunman who offered his assistance to those who could not protect themselves. Please register.

Tuesday, August 12 (3-4 p.m.) Tech Bytes: Mac Help Session – Have quick questions about your Mac or Windows computer? Need help with basic features or navigation? Join our Help Session for a casual drop-in opportunity to learn and share tips! Get short tutorials or assistance with using your computer. No registration required.

Tuesdays, August 12 and 19 and Thursdays, August 14 and 21 (3-4 p.m.) Back to School Skills Camp – Practice reading, vocabulary, and math skills by rotating through learning stations with the help of Westlake High School students. Grades 1-4. No registration required.

Tuesday, August 12 (6-8 p.m.) Art Supply Rescue – Looking for a new hobby? Come by the Makerspace and take some craft supplies! From stamps to fabric, we’ve got the tools for you to make your next project! All materials are free. Donations not accepted.

Tuesday, August 12 (7-8 p.m.) Let’s Talk! Spanish Language Social Hour-¡Hablemos! Hora Social en Español – Meet other fluent Spanish speakers for informal conversation. Register to join.

Tuesday August 12 (7-8:30 p.m.) Tuesday Evening Book Club (In Person AND Virtual) – Join the WPPL Tuesday Evening Book Club in person or on Zoom to discuss “James” by Percival Everett. The discussion will be held in person and on Zoom simultaneously. Please register. If you register for the Zoom option, you will receive a Zoom invitation and instructions by email.

Wednesday, August 13 (2-4 p.m.) Cardboard Creations – Drop in to invent and create with cardboard. Makedo© tools for kids and cardboard provided. Ages 6+ with a caregiver. No registration required.

Wednesday, August 13 (7-8:30 p.m.) Environmentalism Book Club – This month’s title is “Afterglow” by various authors, hopeful and forward-looking short stories that explore how the power of storytelling can help create the world we need. Please register.

Thursday, August 14 (6-7 p.m.) Yoga @ the Pavilion: Slow Flow Yoga – Join us for an outdoor session of Slow Flow Vinyasa Yoga with certified instructor Jen Nebraska. Slow Flow Vinyasa Yoga is a form of Vinyasa Yoga that links the breath, movement, and poses together. Please bring your yoga mat. If inclement weather, the indoor location will be the Porter Room. Please register.

Thursday, August 14 (7-8:30 p.m.) Trivia Night: Out of This World! – Blast off! Test your knowledge of all things sci-fi and outer space: sci-fi books and movies, outer space trivia, and beyond! There will be music, fun friendly competition, and prizes for the winning team! Register solo or in teams of 2-5. Prizes will be awarded to the winning team. Registration begins July 17.

Thursday, August 14 (7-8 p.m.) Thursday Night Book Discussion – This month’s title is “Only the Beautiful” by Susan Meissner. A limited number of copies will be available at the Circulation Desk. No registration required.

Saturday, August 16 (10:30 a.m.-Noon) CRCT 101: Crafting Zero to Cricut Hero – A sticker-making demo to get you up and running with the Cricut smart cutting machines in our Makerspace. No crafting or Cricut accessory experience is needed to attend. All materials and instructions will be provided. The program is intended for teens and adults. Attendees aged 13-17 years must first complete the Makerspace User Agreement with a legal guardian’s signed permission to operate the equipment.

Saturday, August 15 (10:30-11 a.m.) Outdoor Family Storytime – Join us for rhymes, songs, and play outside in the Friends Pavilion! We will be in the Porter Room in the event of inclement weather. Ages 2-6, with a caregiver. No registration required.

Saturday, August 16 (1-2 p.m.) Pokémon Fun! – This will be a time to view and trade cards, do a craft, battle your librarian, or play a Pokémon Bingo game. Feel free to bring your cards!  Ages 6-11. No registration required.

Monday, August 18 (9 a.m.-9 p.m.) Spice it Up! Take Home Kit: Sumac – Sign up for a kit containing a sample of the featured spice and a handout with background on the spice and suggested uses! Registration begins August 11. Kits can be picked up at the library drive up window from August 18-24. One kit per household. Registration begins August 11.

Monday, August 18 (1-2 p.m.) True Crime Book Club – Ann Rule is a pillar in the True Crime world. We couldn’t settle on just one title, so everyone will read a book of their choice and gather together to discuss Rule’s work. Registration begins July 18.

Tuesday, August 19 (6-8 p.m.) Craft Club – Join us at our craft club meeting! Bring a craft and hang out with members of the community. All crafts and skill levels welcome. No registration required.

Tuesday, August 19 (7-8:30 p.m.) British Royal Scandals: Prince Andrew and Megxit – Julie Koenig from Royally Amused joins us to discuss British Royal Scandals. This evening will focus on Prince Andrew and the exit of Harry and Meghan from Royal duties and their estrangement from the rest of their family. Registration begins July 18.

Wednesday, August 20 (2-3 p.m.) Wednesday Afternoon Book Discussion – The Wednesday Book Group meets the third Wednesday of each month. This month’s title is “Sandwich” by Catherine Newman. No registration required.

Wednesday, August 20 (7-8 p.m.) Virtual Author Talk: Casey McQuiston, “The Pairing” – Bring an appetite for sizzling drama as we discuss New York Times bestselling author Casey McQuiston’s latest romantic comedy. Please register.

Thursday, August 21 (11 a.m.-12 p.m.) Tech Bytes: Android Help Session – Have quick questions about your Android device? Need help with basic features or apps? Join our  Help Session for a casual drop-in opportunity to learn and share tips! Get short tutorials or assistance with simple issues with your Android device. For more complex problems, we’ll help you schedule a dedicated appointment. No registration required.

Thursday, August 21 (7-8 p.m.) Mental Health Considerations for Older Adults – Learn about mental health concerns specific to older adults. Discover strategies for self-care and healthy aging and find out about local resources for support in Cuyahoga County. Presented by Kristin Kitzmiller, LISW-S, a clinical social worker and psychoeducation presenter with the National Alliance on Mental Illness Greater Cleveland. Registration begins July 21.

Friday, August 22 (1:30–3 p.m.) Make Art @ WPPL! – Stop by the library to create a piece of art using paints, markers, crayons and other art supplies. While supplies last. Grades 1-5. No registration required.

Friday, August 22 (4–4:45 p.m.) Fun Science Friday: Earth’s Moon – Let’s travel to the moon! We will explore Earth’s moon by learning about its phases, how craters form, and more. For ages 4-6, up to kindergarten. Registration begins August 15.

Saturday, August 23 (11-11:45 a.m.) Adapted Weekend Fun – Let’s have fun together in an interactive program especially for children who may not be successful in a typical library program. In each session we may explore toys, sensory elements, music and movement, or do a craft. This month’s theme is bubbles. For children ages 5 and up. Registration begins August 16.

Saturday, August 23 (2-4 p.m.) Make It, Take It! – Stop by Youth Services to complete a featured craft. While supplies last. PreK-grade 2. No registration required. Not available for pick up at the drive-up window.

Saturday, August 23 (4-5:30 p.m.) Women in History Presents Sally Ride – Women in History presents Sally Ride. At 32, Sally Ride became both the youngest American astronaut and the first American female astronaut in space. Join us to hear more about this remarkable life. Registration begins July 21.

Sunday, August 24 (2-3 p.m.) Art Smarts – Explore the works of a well-known artist and then use what you’ve seen to create an art piece of your own! Grades 4-6. This month’s focus is Yayoi Kusama. Registration begins August 17.

Tuesday, August 26 (6-7:30 p.m.) A Physical Therapy Approach to Healthy Feet, Knees and Hips – Join Gina Croft, from Next Level PT, as she discusses how to keep your feet, knees and hips healthy. She will cover exercises and proper movement and also explain how to manage pain. Registration begins July 29.

Wednesday, August 27 (3:30-5 p.m.) After School in the ‘Space – Tweens and teens are welcome in the Makerspace to create a project with the Makerspace equipment!  Participants must have a signed user agreement from a parent or guardian on file. For ages 11-15.  Please register.

Wednesday, August 27 (7–8 p.m.) Adult Creative Writing Group: Back to School Edition – Join us for an hour of writing prompts to inspire you to keep writing. Creativity is more than putting pen to paper. It’s about breaking away and trying something new! For adults and teens age 16 and up. Please register.

Thursday, August 28 (4-4:45 p.m.) Virtual Author Talk: Tasha Eurich – “Shatterproof” – Learn how to master the daily grind and become shatterproof in a tumultuous world with key insights by Dr. Tasha Eurich as she talks about her newest book, Shatterproof: How to Thrive in a World of Constant Chaos (And Why Resilience Alone Isn’t Enough). Please register.

Saturday, August 30 (10:30 a.m.-Noon) Medicare: Ins and Outs – Do you need accurate, unbiased information about Medicare? Attend a program by OSHIIP, the Ohio Senior Health Insurance Information Program, to learn the “ins and outs” of Medicare.
