Westlake Porter Public Library’s September Calendar of Events

Monday September 1 – Library Closed in observance of Labor Day

Tuesday, September 2 (7–8:30 p.m.) World at War Forum: PT-728 at Liberty Aviation Museum – PT-728 (Thomcat) is housed at the Liberty Aviation Museum in Port Clinton. During this program we will hear about the history of this particular boat and the exploits of PT boats during WW2. Please register.

Wednesday, September 3 (10:30-11:15 a.m.) and Thursday, September 4 (1:30-2:15 p.m.) Adapted Storytime – Join us for this storytime designed for children who may not be successful in a typical storytime. Content is geared toward ages 3-7. Registration begins one week before each session.

Wednesday, September 3 (3-5 p.m.) Teen Crafternoon – Stop by and enjoy a calming afternoon of crafting. Grades 5-12. No registration required.

Wednesdays, September 3, 10, 17 and 24 (5-6 p.m.) Bow Wow Books – Stop by Youth Services to sign up for a 10-minute reading time with a reading therapy dog. Grades K-4. Sign up starts at 4:30 p.m.

Mondays and Wednesday beginning September 3 (5:30-7:30 p.m.) Citizenship Classes – Learn about United States history, government and geography, your rights and responsibilities as a United States citizen, and how to participate in democracy. Participate in naturalization preparation + N-400 review. You will also receive English instruction. Contact The Hope Center for registration.

Wednesday, September 3 (6:30-8:30 p.m.) Horror Film Club – Join us for another creepy classic from the Vault! New members are welcome, but children under 13 must be with an adult. Please register.

Wednesday, September 3 (7-8 p.m.) Virtual Author Talk: Hannah Nicole Maehrer “Accomplice to the Villain” – Embrace your dark side and join us in conversation with Hannah Nicole Maehrer, creator of the “New York Times” bestselling “assistant to the Villain” series. Please register.

Thursday, September 4 and Monday, September 22 (1-7 p.m.) American Red Cross Bloodmobile – Please give blood with the American Red Cross Bloodmobile.

Saturdays, September 6, 13 and 27 and 30 (10:30-11 a.m.) and Wednesdays, September 10 and 24 (7-7:30 p.m.) Family Storytime – Join us for rhymes, songs and play! Ages 2-6 with a caregiver. No registration required.

Saturday, September 6 (1-2:30 p.m.) Seed Saving Know How: How to Harvest and Save Seeds from Your Summer Garden – Learn how to harvest the seeds from the garden you planted this spring and summer. All ages welcome.

Sunday, September 7 (2-3 p.m.) Brick Builders – Do you love Legos©? Then bring your ideas and imagination to Brick Builders! Bricks provided. No registration is required, but room capacity is limited. First come, first served. Ages 5-12.

Sunday, September 7 (2-3 p.m.) Chess Club – Drop in and hone your skills or learn how to play chess in this casual. Non-competitive club. Some sets will be provided, but feel free to bring your own. Grades 1-4.

Monday, September 8 (9 a.m.-9 p.m.) Sensational September Craft Kit Pick Up – Celebrate September with some fun crafts. Space is limited. Crafts recommended for ages 3-7. Kits are available until Sunday, September 14, unless other arrangements are made. Registration begins August 30.

Monday, September 8 (11-11:45 a.m.) Adult Stories and Crafts – Adults with disabilities are invited to laugh, sing and listen to stories, along with a craft or a coloring page.

Mondays, September 8, 15, 22 and 29 (3-5 p.m.) Teen Lounge – Need a place to hang after school? Come to WPPL’s Teen Lounge on Monday afternoons. Enjoy some video games, board games, snacks and more. No registration required. Grades 7-12.

Monday, September 8 (7-8 p.m.) Earth “kind” Meetup Group – Meet with other veg/plant-based- curious individuals to discover new flavors, new foods and more ways to be kind to yourselves and to our earth. This group will meet most months on the second Monday of the month. Various topics will be discussed. No registration required.

Tuesday, September 9 (2-3:30 p.m.) Fall Silk Flower Arrangement – Make a beautiful fall silk flower arrangement. Registration begins September 2.

Tuesday, September 9 (4:30-5:15 p.m.) Teddy Bear Picnic – You and your favorite stuffed animal are invited to a Teddy Bear Picnic! Join us for stories, songs, a craft, and a snack. Bring a blanket, we’ll bring the fun! Ages 3-8. This program is outside in the Friends Pavilion, please dress accordingly. In case of inclement weather, we will meet in the Dover Room. Registration begins September 2.

Tuesday September 9 (7-8:30 p.m.) Tuesday Evening Book Club (In Person AND Virtual) – Join the WPPL Tuesday Evening Book Club in person or on Zoom to discuss “A Woman of No Importance” by Sonia Purnell. The discussion will be held in person and on Zoom simultaneously. Please register. If you register for the Zoom option, you will receive a Zoom invitation and instructions by email.

Tuesday, September 9 (7-8 p.m.) Let’s Talk! Spanish Language Social Hour-¡Hablemos! Hora Social en Español – Meet other fluent Spanish speakers for informal conversation. Register to join.

Wednesday, September 10 (2-3 p.m.) Virtual Author Talk: Jefferson Fisher, “The Next Conversation” – Join us (and be ready to take notes) for an afternoon virtual conversation with communication expert Jefferson Fisher, as we chat about his book, “The Next Conversation: Argue Less, Talk More.” Please register.

Wednesday, September 10 (3:30-5 p.m.) Let’s Make Ice Cream! – Drop in and make your own ice cream by hand! Grades K-6, siblings welcome. In case of inclement weather, this program will be in the Craft Room. This program is outside in the Friends Pavilion. No registration required.

Wednesday, September 10 (7-8:30 p.m.) Environmentalism Book Club – This month’s title is “Everything for Everyone” by M.E. O’Brien. Please register.

Thursday, September 11 (9 a.m.-9 p.m.) 9/11 Remembrance – Visit Christina’s Corner in the Youth Services Department to decorate and add a star to commemorate those who lost their lives on 9/11. Supplies provided.

Thursday, September 11 (4:30-5:15 p.m.) Short Story Workshop Once Upon a Time… – Listen to a classic fairy tale read aloud by one of our librarians, learn literary terms, then write a short story! Grades 1-4. No registration required.

Thursday, September 11 (5-6 p.m.) Social Hour for Teens with Autism – This social hour is a safe and fun space for teens and young adults with autism who are currently enrolled in high school to meet and hang out! There will be snacks and games. We are pleased to partner with the Cuyahoga Board of Developmental Disabilities as a Library Facilitator location. WPPL thanks the Cuyahoga DD for their grant to accomplish a year of inclusive programming. No registration required.

Friday, September 12 (3-4 p.m.) Intro to Google Workspace – Take a tour of Google Workspace, a suite of free, web-based productivity apps that can replace paid office software. Learn how to collaborate and share files with others using the Google ecosystem. A Gmail account is required for this class. Registration begins September 5.

Saturday, September 13 (10:30 a.m.-Noon) DIY Pet Carrier Sling – Learn how to use our Makerspace’s sewing machines and fashion an over-the-shoulder hammock that keeps your on-the-go pets close to your chest. Registration begins September 6.

Saturday, September 13 (2-2:30 p.m.) Read It, Make It @ the Library – We will read one story then make a craft based on the story. Ages 4-7 with a caregiver, siblings welcome. No registration required.

Monday, September 15 (9 a.m.-9 p.m.) Kinder Club Kit Pick-Up – Each bag will contain a variety of early literacy concepts that will be featured on our Kinder Club blog. Ages 4-6. Kits are available until Monday, September 22, unless other arrangements are made. Registration begins September 8.

Monday, September 15 (10-10:30 a.m.) “Dot Day” Celebration – Celebrate International Dot Day with creativity, courage, and collaboration, inspired by the book “The Dot” by Peter Reynolds. We will connect, collaborate and create after reading this story with group and individual craft projects. Ages 3-5. Registration begins September 8.

Monday, September 15 (10:30-11 a.m.) Little Yogis – Stretch, breathe, and move through fun poses that build balance, focus, and joy in this yoga session for children up to age 5 with a caregiver. Please bring a yoga mat or towel. Ages 0-5. Presented by certified yoga instructor Jen Nebraska. Registration begins September 8.

Monday, September 15 (1-2 p.m.) True Crime Book Club – This month’s title is “The Five,” by Hallie Rubenhold. Please register.

Monday, September 15 (2-3 p.m.) Medicare/Medigap Presentation by Weiss Financial Ratings Online – This program will give you the helpful guidance you need to navigate your Medicare supplement options with the Weiss Financial Ratings Series Online Medicare Supplement Insurance Buyers’ Guide. Please register.

Monday, September 15 (6-7 p.m.) Read with a Demon! Westlake High School Football Edition – Kick off Monday night by rushing in to read with our Westlake High School football team and have a chance to win a football signed by our local stars. Wear your Westlake green! Go Demons! Grades 1-4. No registration required.

Tuesday, September 16 (2-3:30 p.m.) Learn How to Make Scones, Clotted Cream and Lemon Curd – Learn from Susan Aldrich the tricks to making delicious scones, clotted cream and lemon curd to impress your guests. Also learn tips and tricks, where to shop to get the best prices, and flavors to add to give scones a new twist. Registration begins September 9.

Tuesday, September 16 (3-4 p.m.) Tech Bytes: iPhone and iPad Help Session – Have quick questions about your iPhone or iPad? Need help with basic features or navigation? Join our Help Session for a casual drop-in opportunity to learn and share tips! No registration required.

Tuesday, September 16 (4-5 p.m.) Make Your Own Whiteboard – Drop in and make a personalized dry-erase board, perfect to hang in a locker or on your bedroom door. Grades 2-5. No registration required.

Tuesday, September 16 (6-8 p.m.) Craft Club – Join us at our craft club meeting! Bring a craft and hang out with members of the community. All crafts and skill levels welcome. No registration required.

Wednesday, September 17 (2-3 p.m.) Wednesday Afternoon Book Discussion – The Wednesday Book Group meets the third Wednesday of each month. This month’s title is “The Heaven and Earth Grocery Store” by James McBride. No registration required.

Wednesday, September 17 (2-3 p.m.) Virtual Author Talk: Gabe Henry – “Enough is Enuf” – Come on a surprisingly hilarious journey with us and author Gabe Henry through the history of the English language, while we discuss troublemakers like Mark Twain who broke all the rules. Please register.

Wednesdays, September 17 and 24 (3-4:30 p.m.) Teen Snacktivity – Who says you can’t play with your food? Drop by the Teen Lounge for a snack-related activity. Enjoy the process then eat the results. All snacks will be assembled and consumed in the Craft Room. While supplies last. Grades 5-12. No registration required.

Thursday, September 18 (12-1 p.m.) Self-Care for Better Mental Health – What is self-care and are you doing it right? Join Sydney Roberts from The Gathering Place for tips to incorporate self-care into your routine and find out how it can improve your health. Sydney Roberts is the Community Program Manager at The Gathering Place. She is a licensed Professional Counselor with a background in trauma based care and mental health. Please register.

Thursdays, September 18 and 24 (4:30-6:30 p.m.) Elementary Homework Help – Sometimes homework is just hard. It helps to practice with someone who has been through it too. Teen volunteers are standing by to offer drop-ins homework help for elementary students, Grades 1-4.

Friday, September 19 (4:30-5:30 p.m.) Welcome to the Pirate Parrrty! – Yarr, mateys! Join us for games, crafts and other activities following a pirate-themed storytime! While supplies last. Grades K-3. No registration required.

Saturday, September 20 (9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.) Adoption 101: Where Do I Begin? Presented by Adoption Network Cleveland – Join Adoption Network Cleveland for a workshop designed specifically for people looking into adoption for the first time. Adoption Network Cleveland is a neutral source of information and not an adoption agency facilitating any adoptions. Please register.

Saturday, September 20 (11-11:45 a.m.) Adapted Weekend Fun – Let’s have fun together in an interactive program especially for children who may not be successful in a typical library program. In each session we may explore toys, sensory elements, music and movement, or do a craft. This month’s theme is bubbles. For children ages 5 and up. Registration begins September 13.

Saturday, September 20 (2-4 p.m.) Make It, Take It! – Stop by Youth Services to complete a featured craft. While supplies last. PreK-grade 2. No registration required. Not available for pick up at the drive-up window.

Sunday, September 21 (2-3 p.m.) Art Smarts – Explore the works of a well-known artist and then use what you’ve seen to create an art piece of your own! Grades 4-6. This month’s focus is Sam Gilliam. Registration begins September 14.

Monday, September 22 (10-10:30 a.m.) Music Monday – Develop pre-reading skills with music, movement and rhythm through stories, songs and rhymes. Ages 2-6 with a caregiver, siblings welcome. No registration required.

Tuesday, September 23 (3-4 p.m.) Tech Bytes: Windows Help Session – Have questions about your Windows computer? Need help with basic features or apps? Join our Windows Help Session for a casual drop-in opportunity to learn and share tips.

Wednesday, September 24 (3:30-5 p.m.) After School in the ‘Space – Tweens and teens are welcome in the Makerspace to create a project with the Makerspace equipment! Participants must have a signed user agreement from a parent or guardian on file. For ages 11-15. Registration begins September 17.

Wednesday, September 24 (7-8 p.m.) NSP Presents: Saturday Morning Cartoons – We’ll explore three animation studios who made some of the best Saturday morning cartoons from the 1960s-1990s and dive into the backstories of some of the most popular cartoon characters from this era! No registration required. Grades 8-Adult.

Wednesday, September 24 27 (7–8 p.m.) Adult Creative Writing Group: Autumn Edition – Join us for an hour of writing prompts to inspire you to keep writing. Creativity is more than putting pen to paper. It’s about breaking away and trying something new! For adults and teens age 16 and up. Please register.

Thursday, September 25 (1-1:30 p.m.) Hear Me Roar: Storytime with Strength – This cross-generational program connects patients with Parkinson’s with our community by sharing stories, songs and movement in this interactive storytime. Ages 2-6, siblings welcome. Registration begins September 18.

Thursday, September 25 (7-8 p.m.) Thursday Night Book Discussion – This month’s title is “Lincoln Highway” by Amor Towles. A limited number of copies will be available at the Circulation Desk. No registration required.

Saturday, September 27 (10-11:30 a.m.) Makerspace Foundations: CNC Orientation – Attend an orientation to learn the basics of using the CNC router and become a verified user of the machine. Registration begins August 30.

Saturday, September 27 (1-2 p.m.) Pokémon Fun! – This will be a time to view and trade cards, do a craft, battle your librarian, or play a Pokémon Bingo game. Feel free to bring your cards!  Ages 6-11. No registration required.

Saturday, September 27 (1-4 p.m.) Nonprofit Open House – Join us for an informal gathering of area nonprofits and supporters. No registration required.

Sunday, September 28 (2-3 p.m.) Come Play With Me – Open playtime for children ages 2-5 with a caring adult. Siblings welcome! No registration required.

Monday, September 29 (10-10:45 a.m.) Preschool STEAM AHEAD: Colorful Science – Is your favorite color a primary or secondary color? Let’s create a rainbow and discover how secondary colors are made. Ages 4-6, up to Kindergarten. Discoveries will be made through hands-on experiments, active participation and a simple take-home project. Registration begins September 22.
