Westlake Porter Public Library’s February Calendar of Events

Sunday, February 1 (1:30-4:30 p.m.) Learn About World Hijab Day and Ramadan – Join the West Cleveland Muslim Association for stories and conversation highlighting the meaning behind the Hijab and Ramadan. Please register.

Sunday, February 1 (2-3 p.m.) Adapted Playdate – Open playtime for children of all abilities. No registration required. Ages 2-7 with a caregiver, siblings welcome.

Monday, February 2 (10-10:30 a.m.) Music Monday – Develop pre-reading skills with music, movement and rhythm through stories, songs and rhymes. Ages 2-6 with a caregiver, siblings welcome. No registration required.

Mondays, February 2, 9 and 23 (3-5 p.m.) Teen Lounge – Need a place to hang after school? Come to WPPL’s Teen Lounge on Monday afternoons. Enjoy some video games, board games, snacks and more. No registration required. Grades 7-12.

Tuesday, February 3 (2-4 p.m.) Jewelry Junction: Evelyn’s Jewelry Workshop – Bring in jewelry to repair or remake into something more modern. You can also just come and make a jewelry item of your choice. Registration begins January 27.

Tuesday, February 3 (5-6 p.m.) Feed the Birds – Learn interesting and unusual facts about our fine-feathered friends, play a “fowl” game, and make a birdfeeder to provide food during the cold winter months. Grades 1-3. Registration begins January 27.

Tuesday, February 3 (6-7:30 p.m.) and Saturday, February 7 (10:30 a.m.-noon) Makerspace Foundations: CNC Orientation – Attend an orientation to learn the basics of using the CNC router and become a verified user of the machine. Registration begins one week before each session.

Tuesday, February 8 (7–8:30 p.m.) World at War Forum: Guadalcanal Campaign – The Six Triple Eight – Molly Sampson, Director of the Sandusky Maritime Museum, joins us to discuss the contributions of the 6888th unit, and all female African American unit sent to England and the subject of a recent film. Please register.

Wednesday, February 4 and Saturday, February 28 (10:30-11:15 a.m.) Adapted Storytime – Join us for this storytime designed for children who may not be successful in a typical storytime experience. Content is geared toward ages 3 to 7 years. Registration begins a week before each session.

Wednesday, February 4 (3-5 p.m.) Teen Crafternoon – One Wednesday of each month stop by and enjoy a calming afternoon of crafting. Grades 5-12. No registration required.

Wednesdays, February 4, 11, 18 and 25 (5-6 p.m.) Bow Wow Books – Stop by Youth Services to sign up for a 10-minute reading time with a reading therapy dog. Sign-up starts at 4:30 p.m. Grades K-4.

Wednesday, February 4 (6-6:30 p.m.) Meet Your Makerspace! – What is the Makerspace? What can you make?  Come and learn all about the equipment available and what is required to use it! Registration begins January 28.

Wednesday, February 4 (6:30-8:30 p.m.) Horror Film Club – Join us for another creepy classic from the Vault! New members are welcome, but children under 13 must be with an adult. Please register.

Wednesday, February 4 (7-8 p.m.) NSP Live: America’s History in Cartoons! – Join Cat, the writer behind WPPL’s Nostalgic Showcase Presents blogs, for an informative celebration and presentation of patriotic cartoons! No registration required.

Thursdays, February 5, 12 and 26 (4:30-6:30 p.m.) Homework Help – Sometimes learning is just hard. It helps to practice school skills with someone who has been through it too. Teen volunteers are standing by for drop-in homework help. Grades 1-6.

Thursday, February 5 (7-8 p.m.) Virtual Author Talk: Vanessa Riley, “Fire Sword and Sea” – Set sail with author Vanessa Riley as she brings to life the daring, gender-defying journey of legendary pirate Jacquotte Delahaye in “Fire Sword and Sea,” an epic tale of identity, love, rebellion, and liberation you won’t want to miss. Please register.

Saturday, February 7 (All Day) Make Your Own Valentine’s Day Card – Make your own Valentine’s Day card for a parent, friend, or other family member! No registration required. Grades K-4.

Saturdays, February 7, 14 and 21 (10:30-11 a.m.) Family Storytime – Join us for rhymes, songs and play! Ages 2-6 with a caregiver. No registration required.

Saturday, February 7 (3-4 p.m.) ROAR! Welcome to the Dinosaur Party – Join us for games, crafts, and other activities following a dinosaur-themed story time! No registration required. Grades K-3.

Sunday, February 8 (2-3 p.m.) Come Play With Me – Open playtime for children ages 2-5 with a caring adult. Siblings welcome! No registration required.

Sunday, February 8 (2-3 p.m.) Chess Club – Drop in and hone your skills or learn how to play chess in this casual, non-competitive club. Some sets provided, but feel free to bring your own. No registration required. Grades 1-4.

Monday, February 9 (All Day) February Craft Kit Pick Up – Celebrate February with some fun crafts. Space is limited. Registration required, beginning February 2. Crafts recommended for ages 3-7.

Monday, February 9 (10-10:45 a.m.) STEAM Ahead: Winter Animals – Explore some animals that hibernate, migrate or adapt to the cold winter weather. Discover different animal tracks and then make some of your own. Ages 4-6, up to kindergarten. Registration begins February 2.

Monday, February 9 (4:30-5:15 p.m.) Tinkering with Tinkercad – Explore 3D design with Tinkercad! Learn the basics, start a project, and return to the Makerspace later to finish. No printing during the session. Grades 3-6. Registration begins February 2.

Monday, February 9 (6-8 p.m.) Valentine’s Day Decorative Wine Glasses – Celebrate with your valentine or special friend by wire-wrapping two wine glasses with glass and silver or gold beads. Registration begins February 2.

Monday, February 9 (7-8 p.m.) Earth “kind” Meetup Group – Meet with other veg/plant-based- curious individuals to discover new flavors, new foods and more ways to be kind to yourselves and to our earth. This group will meet most months on the second Monday of the month. Various topics will be discussed. No registration required.

Tuesday, February 10 (10-11 a.m.) The Classic Radio Hour: The Shadow (1930) – Did you listen to these classic radio programs when they aired? Or are you new to the medium? Either way, we hope you’ll tune in for a trip down Memory Lane and join us for our Classic Radio Hour! Please register.

Tuesday, February 10 (10-11:30 a.m.) Introduction to Finding Grants – Discover what funders are looking for in nonprofits seeking grants and how to find potential funders in this introductory course. Please register.

Tuesday, February 10 (6:30-8 p.m.) Felt Valentine’s Day Garlands – In this program, participants will use the laser engraver to cut felt components for festive Valentine’s Day garlands. Registration begins February 3.

Tuesday February 10 (7-8:30 p.m.) Tuesday Evening Book Club (In Person AND Virtual) – Join the WPPL Tuesday Evening Book Club in person or on Zoom to discuss “You Could Make This Place Beautiful” by Maggie Smith. The discussion will be held in person and on Zoom simultaneously. Please register. If you register for the Zoom option, you will receive a Zoom invitation and instructions by email.

Tuesday, February 10 (7-8 p.m.) Let’s Talk! Spanish Language Social Hour-¡Hablemos! Hora Social en Español – Meet other fluent Spanish speakers for informal conversation. Register to join.

Wednesday, February 11 (12-1 p.m.) Sauce 101 – Learn about the wide world of sauces and how to spice up your meals with Chef Garrett from the Westlake Community Center. He will demonstrate using a portable kitchen cart generously donated by the Friends of Porter Public Library. Please register.

Wednesdays, February 11 and 18 (3-4 p.m.) Snacktivity – Who says you can’t play with your food? Drop by the Teen Lounge for a snack-related activity. Enjoy the process then eat the results. All snacks will be assembled and consumed in the Craft Room. While supplies last. Grades 5-12. No registration required.

Wednesday, February 11 10 (4-5 p.m.) After School in the ‘Space – Tweens and teens are welcome in the Makerspace to create a project with the Makerspace equipment! Participants must have a signed user agreement from a parent or guardian on file. For ages 11-15. Registration begins February 4.

Wednesday, February 11 (7-8:30 p.m.) Environmentalism Book Club – This month’s title is “A Song for the Earth” by Shannon Jade. Please register.

Thursday, February 12 (1-7 p.m.) American Red Cross Bloodmobile – Please give blood with the American Red Cross Bloodmobile.

Thursday, February 12 (2-2:30 p.m.) My First Valentine’s Day – Celebrate your baby’s first Valentine’s Day with a simple keepsake craft. Please register each child attending. Ages infant-18 months with a caregiver. Registration begins February 5.

Thursday, February 12 (2-3 p.m.) Virtual Author Talk: Lindsey Stewart, “The Conjuring of America” – Discover the hidden history and enduring magic of America’s founding Black women as Dr. Lindsey Stewart guides us through centuries of conjure, creativity, resistance, and cultural influence in an unforgettable celebration of her groundbreaking book “The Conjuring of America.”  Streamed live. Thursday, February 12 (3-4 p.m.) Tech Bytes: iPhone and iPad Help Session – Have quick questions about your iPhone or iPad? Need help with basic features or apps? Join our Help Session for a casual drop-in opportunity to learn and share tips.

Thursday, February 12 (5-6 p.m.) Social Hour for Teens with Autism – This social hour is a safe and fun space for teens and young adults with autism who are currently enrolled in high school to meet and hang out! There will be snacks and games. We are pleased to partner with the Cuyahoga Board of Developmental Disabilities as a Library Facilitator location. WPPL thanks the Cuyahoga County Board of DD for their grant to accomplish a year of inclusive programming. No registration required.

Thursday, February 12 (7-8:15 p.m.) Thursday Night Book Discussion – This month’s title is “The Map of Salt and Stars” by Marie Bostwick. A limited number of copies will be available at the Circulation Desk. No registration required.

Saturday, February 14 and Sunday, February 22 (2-3 p.m.) Brick Builders – Do you love Legos©? Then bring your ideas and imagination to Brick Builders! Bricks provided. No registration is required, but room capacity is limited. First come, first served. Ages 5-12.

Monday, February 16 (All Day) Kinder Club Kit Pick-Up – Each bag will contain a variety of early literacy concepts that will be featured on our Kinder Club Blog. Ages 4-6. Registration begins February 9.

Monday, February 16 Spice it Up! Take Home Kit – Paprika – Each kit will contain a sample of the featured spice, some background on the spice and a couple of recipes! This kit will contain paprika. Registration begins February 9.

Monday, February 16 (10:30-11 a.m.) Little Yogis – Stretch, breathe, and move through fun poses that build balance, focus, and joy in this yoga session for children up to age 5 with a caregiver. Please bring a yoga mat or towel. Ages 0-5. Presented by certified yoga instructor Jen Nebraska. Registration begins February 9.

Monday, February 16 (1-2 p.m.) True Crime Book Club – This month’s title is “The Poisoner’s Handbook,” by Deborah Bloom. Please register.

Monday, February 16 (6-6:45 p.m.) Short Story Workshop: In a Galaxy, Far, Far Away – Listen to a science fiction picture book read aloud by one of our librarians, learn literary terms, then write an interstellar short story! No registration required. Grades 1-4.

Monday, February 16 (6-8 p.m.) Brick Builders for Adults – Join Brick Builders for Adults and create a unique LEGO project of your own. Registration begins February 9.

Monday, February 16 (7-8 p.m.) Tax Planning for Retirement – Learn the critical tax question you must answer before retiring. Presented by Dave Herwerden of Westpoint Wealth Management. Please register.

Tuesday, February 17 (3-4 p.m.) Tech Bytes: Android Help Session – Have quick questions about your Android device? Need help with basic features or navigation? Join our Help Session for a casual drop-in opportunity to learn and share tips! No registration required.

Tuesday, February 17 (6-7:30 p.m.) Mardi Gras Masks – Fashion fun cardstock masks from a digital design of your own making in this Carnival-themed program. Ages 13-17 and adult. Registration begins February 10.

Wednesday, February 18 (11-11:45 a.m.) Adult Stories and Crafts – Adults with disabilities are invited to laugh, sing and listen to stories, along with a craft or a coloring page. Registration begins February 11.

Wednesday, February 18 (2-3 p.m.) Wednesday Afternoon Book Discussion – The Wednesday Book Group meets the third Wednesday of each month. This month’s titles are “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” by C.S. Lewis and “once Upon a Wardrobe” by Patti Callahan. No registration required.

Wednesday, February 18 (7-8 p.m.) Surprisingly Fun Things to Do with ChatGPT – Have you heard about ChatGPT, but never seen it in action?  Join us for a demo of a few fun things you can do with this artificial intelligence tool, as well as some pitfalls to avoid. Please register.

Wednesday, February 18 (7-8:30 p.m.) Trivia Night: Fables & Fairy Tales – Dive into the world of the magical & mystical. Test your knowledge of all things folklore, myth, & legend. Register solo or in teams of up to 5. Prizes will be awarded to the winning team. Please register.

Thursday, February 19 (4-4:30 p.m.) Hear Me Roar: Storytime with Strength – This cross-generational program connects patients with Parkinson’s with our community by sharing stories, songs and movement in this interactive storytime. Pre K – grade 2, siblings welcome. Presented in partnership with the Star Center Foundation. No registration required.

Thursday, February 19 (6:30-7:30 p.m.) Olympic Pizza Party – In celebration of the Winter Olympics being held in Italy, let’s have an Italian Pizza Party! Join us in the Youth Services area for some stories, songs, crafts, and other yummy surprises! No registration required. Ages 3-7

Friday, February 20 (3-5 p.m.) Wild about Wildflowers – Learn about wildflowers, why they’re important, and make your own wildflower seed shaker to spread a little beauty in our communities. Please register.

Saturday, February 21 (9:30-9:50 a.m.) Stories in Shadow: You and Me – Step into the world of light and imagination! Please register each child individually. One adult may accompany up to three children. Grades 3-5. Registration begins February 14.

Tuesday, February 24 (9:30-9:50 a.m.) Stories and Signs – Enjoy an interactive storytime while learning a few words in sign language! No registration required. Ages infant-3, siblings welcome.

Tuesday, February 24 (7-8 p.m.) Virtual Author Talk: Tom D. Crouch, “Smithson’s Gamble” – Join us to learn the incredible history behind the world’s largest museum with Smithsonian Curator Emeritus Tom Crouch. This is a Library Speakers Consortium and Smithsonian Institution Collaboration.  Streamed live. Please register.

Tuesday, February 24 (6-7:30 p.m.) Exercises to Reduce Pain in Joints – Join Gina Croft, Next Level PT, as she leads an exercise class to help you stretch to reduce joint pain. Registration begins January 24.

Tuesday, February 24 (6-7:30 p.m.) Kids Comic Workshop – Learn some comic-making techniques, and create your own 8-page comic from start to finish. Grades 3-6. Registration begins February 17.

Wednesday, February 25 (7–8 p.m.) Adult Creative Writing Group: Celebrate Black History Month – Join us for an hour of writing prompts to inspire you to keep writing. Creativity is more than putting pen to paper. It’s about breaking away and trying something new! For adults and teens age 16 and up. Registration begins January 28.

Thursday, February 26 (6:30-7:30 p.m.) It Came From Ohio! – Learn about the famous people, inventions, and innovations that came from Ohio. Join Outreach Specialist, Sarah, for a look back on what makes our state great. Registration begins January 26.

Saturday, February 28 (10:30 a.m.-noon) Makerspace Basics: Sewing Machines & Serger – Build the confidence to approach machine sewing and learn how to finish seams like a professional during this introductory program. Registration begins February 21.

Saturday, February 28 (2-4 p.m.) Make It, Take It! – Stop by Youth Services to complete a featured craft. While supplies last. No registration required. Not available for pickup at the drive-up window. PreK-grade 2.
