Door to door solicitors play on older people’s respect for vets, police and firefighters, and love of little kids.
On 2-26-13, a 72-year-old Westlake woman and her adult daughter reported an incident of an unlicensed solicitor approaching the older woman for a donation.
The solicitor Anthony A. ASHBY (40 years old, last known address in Cleveland) initially approached the victim on 2-24-13 at her home to sell garbage bags on behalf of Veterans Outreach USA (http://veteransoutreach.us). The victim did not have any money and asked him to return the next day.
ASHBY did so; the victim could not find her cash and so agreed to ride with ASHBY to her bank in North Olmsted (note that ASHBY is under 7 license suspensions), withdrew $150, gave it to him, and was driven back home. She then had misgivings about the encounter and called her daughter, who brought her to WPD.
ASHBY claimed to work for Veterans Outreach when contacted by WPD and agreed to return the money. He has not done so. Mark BUTLER of Veterans Outreach was contacted and stated that he uses contractors to raise funds and does not allow donors to be driven around.
A summons for Solicitor Permit Required has been mailed to ASHBY. His criminal background includes: Cuyahoga Common Pleas Ct. convictions for Dom. Violence (misd. 1994), Possession of Drugs (fel. 2003), Trespass (misd. 2012); Lorain County Common Pleas Ct. Dom. Violence (fel.), Resisting Arrest (misd.), Obstructing Official Business (fel.), all in 2005; Cleveland Muny Ct. Dis. Conduct (misd.) 2011; Lakewood Muny Ct. 1998 DCI (misd.), 2000 Drug Paraphernalia (misd.), 2001 and 2005 DCI (misd.); Akron Muny Ct. 2000 Resisting Arrest (misd.): Medina County Common Pleas Ct. Dom. Violence (both fel.) 1996 and 1997.
