(Westlake) Following is Westlake Porter Public Library’s August, 2015 calendar of events:
Saturdays, August 1 and 29 (10:30-11 a.m.) Mother Goose on the Loose! – An interactive storytime featuring simple books, rhymes, songs and movement. For ages birth-3 with an adult caregiver. No registration required.
Saturday, August 1 (2-3 p.m.) Sensation Stations – Drop in for sensory fun! Engage your child’s senses by scooping, pouring, and sorting a variety of materials. No registration required, just drop in!
Saturdays, August 1 and 29 (4-5 p.m.) Full STEAM Ahead – Each session will explore a different aspect of STEAM learning. Grades 3 and 4. Registration begins one week before each session.
Sunday, August 2 (2-3 p.m.) American Girl Doll Club – Grace—Grace loves to bake with friends and invent new recipes. We will follow a recipe to make a treat and create a Paris-themed craft. Ages 6-11. Registration begins July 26.

Tuesday, August 4 (9:30-10 a.m.) Stories and Signs – Enjoy an interactive storytime while learning a few words in sign language! Ages 0-3 with caregiver, siblings welcome. No registration required.
Tuesday, August 4 (10 a.m.-Noon) Career Transition Center: Networking Effectively – Learn how to build and maintain business relationships that will assist you in your job search and your career.
Wednesday, August 5 (1-2 p.m.) Mango Languages – Mango Languages teaches real conversations on over 60 languages and makes it fun. With free mobile apps and learning through videos, you’ll find success quickly and easily. Registration begins August 1 for Westlake residents. Open registration begins August 2.
Wednesdays, August 5, 12, 19, and 26 (4-5:30 p.m.) and Thursdays, August 6, 13, 20, and 27 (6:30-8 p.m.) Bow Wow Books – Stop by the Youth Services Department each Wednesday and sign your child up for a 10-minute reading time with a reading therapy dog! Bring your own book or choose one of ours. Registration begins each Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. and each Thursday at 6 p.m.
Wednesday, August 5 (7-8:30 p.m.) WPPL Horror Film Club – Join us as we explore some of the classic films from the genres of Horror, Science Fiction, and Suspense. Children under 13 should be accompanied by an adult. Please register.
Thursdays, August 6 and 20 (3:45-5:45 p.m.) Tabletop Gaming Group – Board games! Card games! RPGs! Stop by for an afternoon of playing tabletop games with other gamers! Games will include Munchkin, Settlers of Catan, Forbidden Island, and MORE!!! Grades 7-12. Please let us know if you have any game requests.
Thursday, August 6 (7-8:30 p.m.) Digital Photos Online – You’ve taken digital photos. Now learn how to share them with the world! We’ll give an overview of tools like Picasa, Facebook, Flickr, Instagram, Snapchat, and more. Prerequisite: Ability to take digital photos with either a camera or mobile device. Registration begins August 1 for Westlake residents. Open registration begins August 2.
Fridays, August 7 and 14 (2-4 p.m.) Movies @ Your Library! – Join us for Friday afternoon movie matinees! Registration begins one week before each movie. Rated PG. Based on availability; movie titles may change without notice. To be shown:
August 7: Saoirse, a girl who can turn into a seal, goes on an adventure with her brother to save the spirit world. Recommended for ages 7 and up.
August 14: When a diabolical pirate above the sea steals the secret Krabby Patty formula, Spongebob and his nemesis Plankton must team up in order to get it back. Recommended for ages 6 and up.
Saturday, August 8 (10:30-11:15 a.m. AND 11:30 a.m.-12:15 p.m.) Sensory Storytime – A storytime for children with special needs and their parents/caregivers featuring 30 minutes of interactive stories, rhymes, songs and movement activities. Content is geared to ages 3-7. Registration begins August 1. Please choose only one session to attend.
Saturday, August 8 (2-3 p.m.) Brick Builders Club – Bring your ideas and imagination to the club! All bricks provided. Ages 6-12. No registration required.
Sunday, August 9 (2-3:30 p.m.) Boredom Busters! – Games, crafts, puzzles and more! All ages welcome. No registration necessary. In accordance with library policy, children under age nine must be accompanied by an adult.
Tuesday, August 11 (10-11 a.m.) Research Resources – Get an overview of current research databases available from home or at the library. Registration begins August 1 for Westlake residents. Open registration begins August 2.
Tuesday, August 11 (7 p.m.) Tuesday Evening Book Discussion – In August we’ll discuss The Boys in the Boat by Daniel James Brown.
Wednesday, August 12 (3-4 p.m.) Kids in the Kitchen! – Learn basic cooking skills with fast, simple no-bake recipes just for kids! For students with special needs and their typical peers. If you have allergy or special diet concerns, please contact the Youth Department at 440-250-5471 for a complete list of ingredients. Registration begins August 5.
Thursday, August 13 (7 p.m.) Non-Fiction Book Discussion – The August selection is The Thing with Feathers: The Surprising Lives of Birds and What They Reveal about Being Human by Noah Strycker.
Thursday, August 13 (7-8:30 p.m.) Picasa – Google’s Picasa lets you import your digital photos, edit them, put them in albums, and share them on the Web. Learn how! Prerequisite: Gmail account. Registration begins August 1 for Westlake residents. Open registration begins August 2.
Friday, August 14 (10:30-11:30 a.m.) iPad Users Group – Listen to a brief iPad topic then share tips and techniques with other iPad users. Must bring your iPad with you. Please register.
Saturday, August 15 (2-4 p.m.) Carryout Crafts – Stop by the Youth Services Department to see what each day’s featured craft is! Tables will be set up with all of the supplies needed.
Saturday, August 15 (3-5 p.m.) Mad 4 Manga – Each month we watch a different Anime series and talk about our favorite Manga. Sometimes we even throw in some crafts, trivia or Japanese treats! Grades 7-12. No registration.
Monday, August 17 (7-8 p.m.) Introduction to Lynda.com – Learn how to improve your creative, technical or business skills using the online learning platform Lynda.com. Registration begins August 1 for Westlake residents. Open registration begins August 2.
Tuesday, August 18 (10 a.m.-Noon) Career Transition Center: Keys to Finding the Hidden Jobs – Research and informational interviewing can reduce the competition and help you sell yourself to an employer. Learn what research is needed and how to do it to find the best job for you and to learn about positions before they are advertised.
Tuesday, August 18 (7-8:30 p.m.) They Came From Cleveland! – This highly interactive program will test your knowledge of Cleveland’s hometown heroes. Some celebrities are easy to identify, while others present more of a challenge! Please register.
Wednesday, August 19 (7-8:30 p.m.) Maker Club Emerging Technology Program: Science Online – This club explores Maker Movement projects monthly. This month we’ll explore Science Online, a research database covering all aspects of science. It will soon include STEM learning. See what’s currently there, and check out the possibilities! Thursday, August 20 (1-2 p.m.) Using ReferenceUSA for Career Research – Learn how ReferenceUSA can be used in your job search to research businesses and locate job listings. Registration begins August 1 for Westlake residents. Open registration begins August 2.
Thursday, August 20 (2-3 p.m.) Trick Your Locker – You’ll have the coolest locker in school when you trick it out with these fun and useful crafts. Grades 5-7. Registration begins August 13.
Thursday, August 20 (4-5 p.m.) All About Healthcare Websites – Learn how to evaluate the health information that you find on the Web and explore health websites to find valuable information and tools for managing your health. View content that is timely and credible. Registration begins August 1 for Westlake residents. Open registration begins August 2.
Saturday, August 22 (10:30-11:30 a.m.) Pokemon League – Bring your cards and accessories for a fun morning of play, crafts, prizes and more! For kids ages 6-12 only. No registration required.
Saturday, August 22 (2-3 p.m.) Junior Brick Builders! – Let’s build with Duplos! Bring your imagination and we’ll provide the bricks. Ages 3-6. No registration required.

Monday, August 24 (6:30-8:30 p.m.) Coffee with Linda – Local author, spiritual intuitive and channeler Linda Street returns for the fourth in a series of small group discussions on connecting to universal energies to heal ourselves and improve our lives. Attendance will be limited to 20, so you can feel free to ask questions and relate your personal experiences. Registration begins July 25.
Tuesday, August 25 (7-8:30 p.m.) Using Consumer Reports Online – Learn how to use our reference database Consumer Reports to compare products before you purchase. Registration begins August 1 for Westlake residents. Open registration begins August 2.

Thursday, August 27 (7-8:30 p.m.) Facebook Photo Albums, Instagram and Snap Chat – Upload your digital photos to Facebook, “tag” your friends, and share them in albums! Also, learn how to use the popular mobile photo apps Instagram and Snapchat. Prerequisite: Facebook account. If you choose to bring your mobile device, please have Instagram and Snapchat installed on it before the class. Registration begins August 1 for Westlake residents. Open registration begins August 2.

Saturday, August 29 (2-3 p.m.) It Looks Real, It Feels Real, or Is it an Illusion? – In our program, reality isn’t what it seems! Become a master of your own illusions. We will view optical illusions and make some to take home. Ages 10-12. Registration begins Aug. 22.
Saturday, August 29 (2-3:30 p.m.) Meet the Artist Reception – Please join the Westlake-Westshore Arts Council and meet the artists from the juried art show.
Monday, August 31 (7-8 p.m.) The Grand Tour – During the 19th century, wealthy Clevelanders polished their cultural credentials by taking a grand tour of Europe where they explored art galleries, castles, museums, and spectacular natural landscapes. This illustrated talk follows the Wades, Adella Prentiss Hughes and other Clevelanders on their journeys abroad. Presented by the Western Reserve Historical Society. Registration begins July 17.
