Dr. James and Lois Magisano: Doing Well by Doing Good
Community West Foundation annually honors excellence in giving by presenting the prestigious Art of Caring Award.
The award celebrates the exceptional generosity, commitment and outstanding community support embraced by each year’s winner.
2015 award winners are Dr. James and Lois Magisano, west side philanthropists who have made giving an integral part of their lives as community leaders in medicine.
The Magisanos have been involved in Fairview Hospital’s growth for many years, mixing careers in healing with altruistic missions that have elevated their professional interests into a calling that serve others.
Dr. Magisano served as Chief of General Surgery at Fairview Hospital, where he impacted countless lives as a surgeon for over three decades. He became the first physician to be appointed to the hospital’s Board of Trustees and was honored as Physician of the Year in 1993. He received the Pillar of Medicine Award in 2004 and the Community Service Award in 2012. A four-time recipient of the Clinical Teacher of the Year in Surgery, this annual award was named in his honor following his retirement in 1999.
Lois Magisano shares in the deep devotion to Fairview Hospital, where she served as Clinical Supervisor of the Intensive Care Unit for 11 years.
As a member of the Community West Foundation Board of Directors since 2005, Dr. Magisano has never missed a site visit to a Foundation grantee organization, allowing him to guide and witness the great work area nonprofits are doing with the support of the Foundation.
The Magisanos helped start ‘Club Med’ at Community West Foundation, which unites the retired physician community with Foundation work. As philanthropists, they support many charitable causes. They created the Dr. James A. and Lois Magisano Donor Advised Fund through the Foundation that has given grants to many organizations, including Community West Foundation, Catholic Community Foundation, Catholic Charities, North Coast Health, St. Angela Merici Parish, St. Ignatius High School, University of Mount Union, Wakeman Congregational Church, Northern Ohio Hemophilia Foundation, and the Fairview Hospital Moll Cancer Center.
The Magisanos further demonstrate commitment by their membership in the Community West Foundation Legacy Society.
