It was a battle of Southwestern Conference powers as Avon Lake traveled to Westlake Friday night and beat the host Demons, 42-35, in a big-time slugfest on the newly dedicated turf of Westlake’s UH St. John Medical Center Stadium.
Avon Lake senior quarterback Matt Pappas led the way by going 16-25 passing for 265 yards and three touchdowns. Senior running back Tyler Nelson had three touchdowns on the new turf, scoring from 9, 1 and 54 yards.
Westlake played tough, led by Terrance Rose’s 86-yard kickoff return in the first quarter. Westlake quarterback Trey Bialowas had three touchdown passes, two 33-yarders to Conner Sterneckert and Q’Darr Robinson and an 18-yarder to Rose, who made great catch as he charged to the corner of the end zone. Bialowas ended with 198 yards of total offense. Westlake also recovered the onside kick late to keep hopes alive, but an interception by Avon Lake’s Jake Sommers with 2:43 left stopped the threat. Both teams are now 2-1.
