Avon High School Band Superior Rating

Congratulations to the Avon High School Mighty Eagle Marching Band for earning a Superior rating at the Ohio Music Education Association (OMEA) State Band finals in Brunswick this past weekend.

Below are some facts regarding the band’s history with the OMEA Marching Band State Competition, and State Competition overall.

  1. Since 1997 (the first state competition performance for Avon), this is the 8th Superior rating at State earned by the Avon Mighty Eagle Marching Band. Superiors were earned in: 1997, 2000, 2001, 2003, 2005, 2006, and 2007.
  2. This is the first time that we have earned a Superior in Class AA at State.
  3. Some 2016 OMEA State figures (2017 data is not available yet, and regrettably, there were some cancelled state performances at Dayton this week due to inclement weather). **In 2016, 212 bands competed at OMEA Competitions **of those bands, around half qualified for State *Out of those bands that qualified for State, only 50-60% of those bands earned a Superior rating at State).

“I would like to acknowledge the journey of our senior class,” said Aaron Jacobs, AHS band director. “We did not even qualify for State their freshman year, as sophomores/juniors we earned an Excellent rating, as seniors they helped us achieve something that our band has not done since 2007 in earning the Superior. I would also like to acknowledge how inexperienced our band was at the start of the season. Out of 95 members, 34 were freshman (including half of the Color Guard), and we had two sophomores who marched for the first time, and two students who moved into Avon that joined right as our season was beginning. There were also eight students amongst all grades who were playing their chosen instrument for the first time at the beginning of the season (some band students filling a new and needed role, and some orchestra students learning a band instrument). It is a testament to the work ethic and dedication of the marching band members this season, and we have so much to build upon going into the future.”

Rating breakdown at State (there were two music judges….each is a rating, (I) is Superior and (II) is Excellent: Music: I/II • Percussion: I/II/II (II overall): The two music judges and a specific judge just for percussion contribute the three ratings for percussion. • Visual: I/I • General Effect: I/II • Guard: I/I
