Following is Westlake Porter Public Library’s October, 2018 calendar of events:

Mondays, October 1, 15, 22 and 29 (3:30-5:30 p.m.) Teen Lounge – Need a place to hang out after school? Come to WPPL’s Teen Lounge on Monday afternoons! We have computers, video games, board games, snacks, and more! For grades 7-12 only. No registration required.

Mondays October 1, 15 and 22 (4-5 p.m.) Tween Code Club – Learn how to build an app, design a video game, and change the world through code! Registration begins one week before each session. Grades 3-8.

Tuesdays, October 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30 (2-3:30 p.m.) Conversational Spanish – Spanish is the most popular second language learned in the United States. Please join us to learn Spanish vocabulary and pronunciation with an expert instructor. You’re sure to be speaking the romance language fluently in no time. No registration required.

Tuesday, October 2 (6:30-8 p.m.) Advanced Grantseeking Using Foundation Directory Online – Bring your computer and learn the best ways to enhance your grantseeking using the newly-revised Foundation Directory Online and other essential tools. This class is designed as a hands-on grantseeking class for those who want to identify new sources of funding. Please register.

Tuesday, October 2 (6:30 p.m.) Connecting for Kids’ Coffee and Chat – Join our interactive support group and meet other families facing similar struggles. This group is for families of children ages 0-12 years. Free, supervised children’s activities are available, but adults and children must register separately. Topic: Dealing with a Diagnosis – Receiving a diagnosis for your child is overwhelming. Receive encouragement as we discuss the article, When Your Child is Diagnosed with Special Needs. Lisa Ruman, LISW, CHt, of The Child & Family Counseling Center of Westlake, will facilitate a discussion about common reactions, how to seek support, tips for telling family and friends, and taking it one day at a time. Wednesday, October 3 (1-2:30 p.m.) Cuyahoga West Genealogy Society Help Session – Please join the genealogy group for an informal walk-in help session.

Wednesdays, October 3, 10, 17 and 24 (4-5:30 p.m.) and Thursdays, October 4, 11 and 18 (6:30-8 p.m.) Bow Wow Books – Stop by Youth Services to sign up for a 10-minute reading time with a reading therapy dog. Registration begins each Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. and Thursday at 6 p.m.

Wednesday, October 3 (6:30-8:30 p.m.) Horror Film Club – Calling all horror film fans: Join us for another creepy classic from the vault…if you dare! New members are always welcome, but children under 13 should be accompanied by an adult. Please register.

Wednesday, October 3 (7-7:45 p.m.) Mix-It-Up! – Let’s mix it up with pumpkins and apples at our exploration stations! Use your senses as we have fun playing and discovering! Ages 4-6. Registration begins September 26.

Saturday, October 6 (10-11:30 a.m.) Beginning Coding for Adults – Learn the basics of coding through self-paced online modules. An instructor will be on hand to help get you started and to facilitate lessons. Please register.

Saturday, October 6 (2-3 p.m.) Brick Builders – Love those bricks? Bring your ideas and imagination! Lego® and Duplo® bricks provided. For ages 3-12. No registration required.

Saturday, October 6 (3-3:30 p.m.) Spook-tacular Candy Houses – Spiders, and ghosts, and bats, oh my! It’s time to create your own Halloween candy house! All supplies provided. Ages 8 to 10. Attendee MUST Give 24 HOUR cancellation notice to allow others on the waiting list to attend. Registration begins September 29.

Saturday, October 6 (3:30-4 p.m.) Family Storytime – An interactive family storytime featuring books, rhymes, songs, movement, and a small craft. For families with children ages 2-6. No registration required.

Sunday, October 7 (2-3:30 p.m.) Boredom Busters! – Are you bored? Drop by the Storytime Room and join in the fun! We will have different activities available each month. All ages welcome! No registration necessary!

Sunday, October 7 (2-4 p.m.) Puppet Workshop – Create a puppet, learn about puppetry, put on a play in our theatre and enter into a raffle for tickets to see Peter and the Wolf with the National Marionette Theatre in partnership with the Cleveland Philharmonic Orchestra. No registration necessary.

Tuesday, October 9 (10-11:30 a.m.) Intro to Smartphones – Learn the basics of using smartphones, such as screen brightness, wifi settings, adding apps, and more! If bringing your device, please bring all account passwords. Please register.

Tuesday, October 9 (1-2:30 p.m.) Researching Your Roots – This class is an introduction to Ancestry.com as well as other online resources that can be used to research your family. Bring the names and dates of relatives that you do know – you’ll have time for individual research. Please register.

Tuesday, October 9 (7 p.m.) Tuesday Evening Book Discussion – In October we’ll discuss The Stranger in the Woods by Michael Finkel.

Wednesday, October 10 (2-3 p.m.) Free Streaming Movies and TV – Learn how to set up Kanopy, Acorn TV and Hoopla accounts and watch a demonstration of all three so you can easily view movies at home via these streaming services. An email address and library card are needed to access them. Please register.

Wednesday, October 10 (3:30-5 p.m.) Teen Lounge: High Schoolers Only! – In honor of Teen Read Week we’re throwing a special Teen Lounge for only high schoolers. Stop by for snacks, video games, crafts, and just hanging out! Grades 9-12 only. No registration required.

Wednesday, October 10 (7-8 p.m.) Cleveland Philharmonic Orchestra Concert Preview – Enhance your knowledge of “Peter and the Wolf” (Serge Prokofiev) and “Carnival of the Animals” (Camille Saint-Saëns) with this free talk with local music expert and enthusiast, Jeanne Hansen. Registration begins October 3.

Thursday, October 11 (11 a.m.-12 p.m.) Crafty Adults – Create art of your own based on the work of a famous artist or holiday. Specifically for ages 18 and up with developmental or intellectual disabilities. No registration required.

Thursday, October 11 (2-3:30 p.m.) Great Decisions Discussion Program on World Affairs – Discuss critical global issues facing America today. At the beginning of each month a copy of the article may be picked up at the Ask Us Desk. Please read prior to the meeting. Please register.

Friday, October 12 (9:30 and 10:30 a.m.) and Saturday, October 13 (9:30, 10:30 and 11:30 a.m.) Connecting for Kids’Music Therapy & MoreSM – For families and their children (ages 0-6 years) who are struggling in an area of development. Join us for a hands-on program designed to teach families how to use music to improve their child’s motor, communication and social skills as well as behavior. This program is led by a Board-Certified Music Therapist. Siblings (ages 0-6 years) may also attend but must register separately. Each session is 30 minutes. Friday, October 12 (9:30-10 a.m.) My First Autumn – Celebrate your baby’s first autumn with a simple “thumb-kin patch” craft. For babies 0-18 months with a caregiver. Registration begins October 5.

Saturday, October 13 (10 a.m.-1 p.m.) ACT Practice Exam – Get ready for test time with an ACT practice exam. Students are asked to bring their own pencils and scientific calculator. A free results session will take place the following week. Grades 9-12. Registration begins October 6.

Saturday, October 13 (1 and 2:30 p.m.) Connecting for Kids’ Elementary ExperiencesSM – These hands-on training programs are designed for families and their children (ages 7-12 years) who are struggling. Families will learn targeted skills together and will leave with ideas and resources to use at home. Adults are expected to participate in the program with their children. Topic: Managing Anger and Controlling Emotions – Wendy Lorince, OTR/L, of Cleveland Clinic Children’s Hospital for Rehabilitation will help children learn how to manage their anger and take control of their emotions. Using the book, What to Do When Your Temper Flares as a guide, Lorince will lead participants through a session where she teaches children with fun, hands-on activities.

Saturday, October 13 (2-4 p.m.) Carry Out Crafts – Stop by the Youth Services Department to see what our featured craft is this afternoon. We have all the supplies you’ll need to create something fantastic! No registration required.

Saturday, October 13 (3-5 p.m.) Anime Club – A great club for anime and manga lovers! All otakus and newbies are welcome! Grades 7 to adult. No registration required.

Sundays, October 14 and 28 (2-4 p.m.) Chess Club – Hone your chess skills or learn how to play the game. Recommended for ages 6+, but all ages are welcome. If you have a chess set, please bring it with you. No registration necessary.

Monday, October 15 (6:30-7:15 p.m.) Adapted Storytime – Children with varying learning styles and abilities learn in a safe, supportive environment where respect and appreciation for differences are encouraged. This 30 minute storytime, followed by time for socialization, is designed for children who may not be successful in a typical storytime experience. Content is geared toward ages 3-7, but all ages are welcome. Siblings may also attend, but must register separately. Registration begins October 8.

Monday, October 15 (7-8:30 p.m.) Investors’ Interest Group: Building an Investment Portfolio – A critical part of making good financial decisions is understanding the tools needed to build a strong portfolio. Participants will learn how to develop and manage an effective, long-term investment strategy, including: diversification, re-balancing, re-allocation and how to reduce portfolio overlap. Monday, October 15 (7-8:30 p.m.) Maker Monday: Arduino & Raspberry Pi – Learn about these tiny but mighty technology tools – one a microcontroller, the other a credit card-sized computer – and learn what others have made with them. Please register.

Tuesday, October 16 (9:30-10 a.m.) Stories and Signs – Enjoy an interactive storytime while learning a few words in sign language! Ages 0-3, siblings welcome. No registration required.

Tuesday, October 16 (10-11 a.m.) Tech Lab: e-Health Devices – Holly Klingler will talk about the latest tech gadgets for health, such as smart watches and Bluetooth blood pressure cuffs. Please register.

Tuesday, October 16 (1-3 p.m.) Career: Planning and Managing Time in Job Search – Most job seekers do not spend their time as efficiently as is necessary to get the best outcome. Learning how to plan your work and work your plan might get you to the next step more quickly. Try the ABC method of ranking priorities to overcome obstacles to success! No registration necessary.

Tuesday, October 16 (6:30-8:30 p.m.) Outrage in Ohio: A Rural Murder, Lynching, and Mystery – Come see author David Kimmel (English, Heidelberg University) discuss his book Outrage in Ohio: A Rural Murder, Lynching and Mystery. In June 1872 13-year old Mary Secaur left her church for home. Her disappearance and murder set off an interstate manhunt which led to conflicting confessions and the lynching of an itinerant peddler and an intellectually disabled teenager. The author sets out to discover what led to the lynching and who the perpetrators actually were. Please register.

Tuesday, October 16 (7:30-8:30 p.m.) Westlake Westshore Arts Council – Students from the Cleveland Institute of Music’s Opera program will perform scenes from CIM’s fall opera. Free and open to the public. No registration required.

Wednesday, October 17 (10-11 a.m.) 5 Steps to Better Hearing – We will review steps that you can take to improve your hearing, including deciding where you want to hear better, using good communication skills, the importance of routine hearing evaluations, how hearing loss is affected by certain diseases, and how you can use technology to help you hear better. Presented by the Cleveland Hearing and Speech Center. Please register.

Wednesdays, October 17 and 24 (10-11:30 a.m.) Using Web-Based Email for Beginners – In a two-part class, learn the basics of using web-based email such as Gmail, Yahoo, and more. Please register for BOTH classes.

Wednesday, October 17 (6:30-8:45 p.m.) Cuyahoga West Genealogical Society – Tom Cirincione will discuss Using Newspapers in Genealogy.

Thursday, October 18 (Noon-1:30 p.m.) Small Business Lunch & Learn: Social Media 101 – Growing your business through social media views are great, but engagement is better. Learn to navigate the ever-changing world of Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn & YouTube. Wendy Stanich, Digital Marketing Consultant with RevLocal, will discuss how often you should be sharing content vs. promoting your business, how to keep existing customers engaged while reaching new customers, how to organize content and schedule posts, and where your target audience spends most of their time. Thursday, October 18 (Preschool session: 6:30 p.m.) and Friday, October 19 (Preschool session: 9:30 a.m. and Toddler Session: 11:30 a.m.) Connecting for Kids’ Teach Me to PlaySM – A play-based program for families and their children (Toddler: ages 18 months-2 years and Preschool: ages 3-6 years) who are struggling in an area of development. Diverse opportunities for learning are provided, with an emphasis on facilitating communication, practicing social interactions and responding to behaviors in a positive way. Each themed session offers a variety of engaging individual, small and whole group activities. The staff coaches families, demonstrates and suggests strategies, responds to questions and provides resources. The program is led by an experienced Early Intervention Specialist and Speech-Language Pathologist. Friday, October 19 (3:30-4:15 p.m.) Fun Science Friday: Bashful Bats – Join Mrs. K as we explore the wonders of our world. Let’s build a food chain that includes bugs and bats. Discover how bats use echolocation to find their food through hands-on experiments, active participation and a simple take-home project.  Ages 4-6. Registration begins October 12.

Saturday, October 20 (9:30-11:30 a.m.) Secure Document Shredding – Wondering “How To” keep your information secure? InfoStore will confidentially handle and permanently destroy two boxes of your personal documents. The shredding truck can shred staples, paperclips, and rubber bands, but cannot shred spiral bound notebooks, 3-ring binders, or your boxes. The truck will be located in the south parking lot until 11:30 or until it is full.

Saturday, October 20 (10 a.m.-4 p.m.) How-To Halloween! – Join us in the Youth Services Department for some spook-tacular crafts! While supplies last. All ages welcome. No registration required.

Saturday, October 20 (10:30-11:30 a.m.) Pokemon Fun! – A fun morning of Pokemon-themed play, prizes, and crafts! Ages 6-11. No registration required.

Saturday, October 20 (2-4 p.m.) How-To Festival – Have you ever wondered how to…anything? Explore our open house-style event held throughout the meeting rooms. Learn about making smoothies, origami, composting, 3D printing, making pop-up books, panning for gold, and more!

Sunday, October 21 (3-4 p.m.) Art Smarts – Explore works of a well-known artist and then use what you’ve seen to create an art piece of your own! This month’s artist is Charley Harper. Grades 3-6. Please register.

Monday, October 22 (6-7:30 p.m.) Sensory-Friendly Movie – A sensory-friendly environment including more light, less sound and the option to move around the room will help children with special needs and their families enjoy this free movie screening. All ages. Registration begins October 15.

Mondays, October 22 and 29 (7-8:15 p.m.) Tai Chi for Health – Discover the healing effects of this movement therapy. Wear comfortable clothing. Held outdoors, weather permitting. Please register.

Tuesday, October 23 (10:30-11:30 a.m.) Tablet Tuesday User Group – This group will share tips and tricks with each other about using iPads and Android Tablets. Kindle Fire users welcome! Please bring your devices. Registration begins September 23.

Tuesday, October 23 (2-3:30 p.m.) Travel Club: Rochester, NY – Rochester might not be your first thought for a getaway, but it’s only a few hours drive and there’s plenty to do there for the whole family. There are also plenty of sights to see along the way! Registration begins September 23.

Tuesday, October 23 (7-7:30 p.m.) Bedtime Stories – Put on your pajamas and join Mrs. K. as we unwind at the end of the day with stories, songs, fingerplays, and other activities. This month: Bats. Ages 4-6. Siblings welcome. No registration required.

Wednesday, October 24 (2 p.m.) Wednesday Afternoon Book Discussion – The October selection is Stars Are Fire by Anita Shreve.

Wednesday, October 24 (7-8 p.m.) Social History of the Black Death – Join Dr. Elizabeth Lehfeldt, Dean of the Mandel Honors College and Mandel Professor in Humanities at Cleveland State University, as she discusses the cultural and social impact of the spread of the Bubonic Plague, and how the effects of the pandemic influenced other developments in European societies. Saturday, October 27 (2-3 p.m.) 3D Printing Orientation – In order to use the library’s 3D printer, you’ll need to take this orientation first. Learn library policies about using it, how to download a 3D-printable object, and how to prepare it for a great print. Please register.

Saturday, October 27 (2-4 p.m.) Craftapalooza – Come to the library and help us clean out our craft closet. A variety of make-it and take-it crafts will be available at the Youth Services desk. No registration required.

Saturday, October 27 (2-3:30 p.m.) Jump-Start Your Creativity – Has your muse moved and left no forwarding address? Not to fear! Drawing from her award-winning book, RUT-BUSTING BOOK FOR WRITERS, author and speaker Nancy Christie will provide practical tips to get you out of your writing rut. She’ll give you a myriad of suggestions to break through your roadblocks so you can get back on your creative path. Please register.

Sunday, October 28 (2-3 p.m.) American Girl Doll Club: Mystery Party – We need your help! We have several American Girl Mini-Mysteries to solve. Bring your dolls and join us to crack these cases! Ages 6-11. Registration begins October 21.

Monday, October 29 (1-2:30 p.m.) Medicare Open Enrollment Updates – October 15 – December 7 is Medicare Open Enrollment. A Community Liaison from OSHIIP (Ohio Senior Health Insurance Information Program) with the Ohio Department of Insurance will provide us with timely information regarding Medicare coverage. Questions will be answered at the end of the presentation. Please register.

Monday, October 29 (3-4 p.m.) Weiss Ratings Medigap Report Workshop – Weiss Ratings, a source for independent, unbiased financial strength ratings of insurance companies, offers a personalized Medigap Report with step-by-step guidance on how to select the best and most affordable Medicare Supplement Insurance Plan for your needs.
