The official Twitter account of the Cleveland Indians community efforts, @TribeInspires held a sweepstakes earlier this month, asking fans to share their efforts in the community during this unprecedented time. Sweepstakes winner and Holy Trinity School teacher Miss Melissa Johnson, who was awarded signed Adam Plutko cleats for her entry, is pouring her heart and soul into virtual learning for her third grade classroom.
Johnson, known affectionately as “Peach” by her students and peers, is working tirelessly to adjust to e-learning and diversify her students’ at-home learning experience. She created “Flat Miss Johnson” in an effort to be near each of her students during a time of social isolation. Similar to Flat Stanley, each of her students has received a Flat Miss Johnson and has been tasked with documenting her quarantine adventures. Students take photos with Flat Miss Johnson and share them with the class throughout the week.
Most recently, Slider surprised the third-graders with a classroom visit on Zoom. The visit from the Indians mascot was one of several ways Johnson has worked to bring the city of Cleveland to her students while they learn from home. Usually, Johnson sends students “virtual field trips,” which consist of a video of Cleveland and lessons about the city. The visit from Slider, she said, was the students’ most exciting lesson since quarantine began.
Fans are encouraged to follow @TribeInspires on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook to learn more about the Indians efforts in the community.
