Injury MVA
Multiple reports of a bad accident at W 227 Brookpark Rd. Upon arrival, officers learned that a driver pulled out of W 227 to turn left on Brookpark Rd, directly into the path of a vehicle traveling E/B on Brookpark. The E/B driver swerved to try and avoid contact, but caromed off the other vehicle, crossing the median and driving through the brick back wall of the condo garages on the south side of the road. The 19 year old female driver was taken to the hospital by paramedics. The other driver, a 79 year old male, had no injuries and was cited for Failing to Yield When Turning Left.
Be Careful: Girls Struck While Crossing the Street
Fairview Park Police report that two little girls who were crossing the street with parents in a cross walk were struck by a car:
Police responded to a car vs pedestrian MVA at W 210/Lorain Rd. Upon arrival, it was found that a 6 year old girl and an 11 year old girl had been struck by a car while crossing the street. One girl was riding a scooter, and the other her bike, and the parents were walking with them. The car that struck them was E/B on Lorain and turned left, striking the girls while in the crosswalk. Both girls appeared to have only minor injuries, and were taken to Fairview Hospital for evaluation.
The driver of the car was a female, who repeatedly gave false information to officers. Upon finally giving her real name and information, it was found that she had a suspended license, and had a Felony drug warrant from Erie County Sheriff’s Office. She was arrested on the felony warrant and for Obstructing Justice, and was also cited for DUS and Failing to Yield to Pedestrians in a Crosswalk.
Scam Alert
On 7/29/20 Westlake resident reported that he had applied for a job on-line with “Zevia Zero” – an energy drink company. After being told he was hired, the company sent him a check for almost $3000 and told their “new employee” to cash the check and send a portion back to the company. Luckily, the alert complainant realized something was wrong and did not cash the check. He also blocked the phone number of the company to avoid any further scam attempts. He was advised to contact the credit bureaus to flag his account to avoid any possible ID theft issues from his job application.
Driver’s Ed
On 8/13/20 at approx. 8:30PM a concerned motorist reported that a vehicle was driving recklessly on Dover Center at Center Ridge Rds. Westlake officers located the described vehicle and stopped it for a moving violation on Westwood at Columbia. The 15yo driver had his temp permit and was practicing driving with his 43yo father. While both of their licenses were valid, the dad did have a warrant for failing to pay for fines and court costs due to a prior conviction. While officers were checking on the dad, they discovered that he was in possession of drug paraphernalia and a baggie of white powder. The Westlake resident was advised to take care of his warrant and that additional charges would be pending results of the lab results on the suspected narcotics.
Passed Out in Construction Zone
On 8/3/20 at about 11PM officers responded to a report of a vehicle stopped in the construction zone of Hilliard Blvd by Columbia Rd. Officers arrived to find a female slumped over in the driver’s seat. The female did wake up but was very lethargic. Officers noted indications of illicit drug use in plain view and requested an ambulance. She had to be physically assisted to a cot before she was transported to UH St. John Medical Center. She admitted to consuming a narcotic and was cited with operating a vehicle under the influence.
Scammer Charged
On 8/5/20 an employee of a business in the 26000 block of Detroit Rd reported that a male who claimed to work at a neighboring business had come in to ask a favor. According to the suspect’s story, he was locked out of the neighboring business and needed a small amount of cash to pay a locksmith an insurance deductible to get back inside. The male scammer promised to repay the petty cash as soon as he had access to his building. Wanting to help out a fellow business, the victim loaned the suspect the cash. Of course the suspect never returned. Westlake officers were familiar with the scammer who currently had a warrant for his arrest for perpetrating the same crime. Additional charges were levied against the 47yo male who’s last known address was in Highland Hts.
Related Thefts
On 8/13/20 at about 1AM an officer observed a vehicle with its lights illuminated in the closed Ganley BMW parking lot on Sperry Dr. Before he could check on what the occupants were up to, they fled the area. Upon investigating the scene, it was learned that the occupant(s) had cut the catalytic converter off of 1 truck in the lot and tried to steal another complete vehicle. Although the suspects did not get the vehicle, they did take one of the dealer plates from the lot.
At approx. 09:30AM officers responded to 24000 block of Detroit for a report of a stolen catalytic converter off a box truck in a parking lot.
At approx. 10AM officers responded to another parking lot in the 24000 block of Detroit Rd for a report of 3 work vans that had been entered. Over $10,000 in tools were reported stolen.
– Investigators believe that all the thefts were committed by the same suspects. They are following up with evidence collected.
