Westlake Police: No Joy for 15-Year Old Joyrider

On 8/18/20 at approx. 3AM an officer stopped a vehicle on Bradley by Detroit Rd after watching it pull into and out of several driveways in the area.  The vehicle also appeared to have fresh damage.  The operator, who turned out to be a 15 year old boy, said that he was “not looking for trouble” but the car was stolen.  The Westlake resident admitted that he was bored and had entered unlocked cars on Porter Rd.  After finding one with the keys inside he took the whole vehicle.  The kid had also been drinking.  The male was arrested for the stolen vehicle and for operating it while intoxicated.  Charges were filed through Juvenile Court.  The boy was turned over to his parents after he refused a breath test.

Motel Madness

On 8/15/20 at approx. 2PM officers stopped a vehicle on Crocker for a traffic violation.  The occupant had just pulled out of the Red Roof Inn.  A Westlake PD K9 alerted to the vehicle.  Investigation revealed suspected methamphetamine along with paraphernalia including syringes, straws and burnt pipes.  The 45yo Elyria male claimed that the contraband was left in his vehicle by an acquaintance.  He was charged with misdemeanor drug offenses.

On 8/19/20 at approx. 3:30AM WPD received a call from a male who reported that his friend had been in Cleveland but got into an argument and decided to walk back to the Red Roof Inn in Westlake via I90.  The complainant said that the friend was walking on the highway when a passerby yelled something at him.  He then lost phone contact with the friend and was requesting the police check on him.  Officers located the 47yo male Cleveland resident walking in the area.  He checked ok but did have a warrant from Parma PD.  He was transported to their custody.

Thefts from Autos

WPD took 4 reports of thefts from unlocked autos this week.  On 8/19/20, a resident of Remington Apartments on Detroit Rd reported that her vehicle had been entered.  Loose change and an ID were taken.  On 8/20, 3 residents of Hamlet Ln reported that their vehicles had been rummaged through.  Items reported missing included jewelry and ID badges.

Amazon Scam

On 8/21/20 a citizen reported that after having problems with an Amazon delivery she used Google to look up a phone number for Amazon package help desk.  She spoke to a male with an accent who walked her through the “process” to get a refund for the lost package.  The victim ended up purchasing over $1000 worth of gift cards and giving the fake Amazon Rep. the numbers.  She soon realized that this was a scam.  A fraud report was generated.
