Bay Men’s Cross Country wins the GLC 60% Solution Race

When the cancellation of the GLC Preview scheduled on August 29th was announced, racing at Cahoon Park this weekend seemed highly unlikely. With the efforts of Bay Athletic Director Matt Spellman and many others, we thankfully were able to host a very nice event, that had a close resemblance to the GLC Preview.  Lakewood and Rocky River High schools entered large rosters, which combined with Bay High’s created a field of runners equal to about 60% of the 2019 GLC Preview’s 141 finishers. The Men’s race was a tale of alternating 800 meter races within the race of 3200 meters. Rocky River started very aggressively and looked to be ahead during the first half mile. Will Warren, Jude Ault and Jacob Feicks took control of the race at the beginning of the second half mile, with only Rocky River’s Luke Kishna keeping contact. Michael Muccio and Ezra Fleeman executed their plan of helping pace each other to near perfection, as they were able to distance themselves from the remaining 78 runners. As they entered the woods for the third 800, Bay was able to exert it’s will, and continue on to a convincing team victory and the low score of 21. Rocky River finished second with a score of  38, with Lakewood at 70.

Individual honors were many for the Rockets, beginning with Senior Will Warren,  who won the 3200 meter race, averaging 5:12 per mile on the damp course, for a total time of 10:24. Senior Jude Ault ran a race as good as can be for a second place, only one second back with a fine 10:25 effort. Senior Ezra Fleeman, just edged out Junior Michael Muccio for forth place, as they ran 10:50.7 and 10:50.8 respectively. Senior Jacob Feicks  in 9th, held off the charge from Junior Luke Hansen who was 1oth, less than one second behind Jacob’s time of 11:07. Sophomore James Chilton, scored for the first time as a Rocket varsity runner, running a smart, well paced race of 11:26, good for 17th place. Bay’s next two, Junior  Jimmy Hanselman and Will Dunstan, were running in their first race for the team.  They both looked more like veteran athletes, as they moved up well through the field to record finishes of 19th for Jimmy and 22nd for Will, with times of 11:31 and 11:34. Sophomore Patrick Melvin also averaged under 6 minutes per mile, running 11:48, for a fine finish in 26th place. The trio of sophomore Andrew Lazowski(12:05), Senior Jonathan Douglas(12:10), and sophomore Roan Williams(12:12) ran well in the first event of  the 2020 season. Sophomore Iain Ray and Senior Ryan Duffy, both who are trying to overcome some painful stress injuries, ran with grit and determination, to best  about half of the field of competitors. Sophomore Owen Gerig, showing he is starting to get in better condition, ran 12:47, for 50th place. Seniors, Patrick Mowchan and Patrick Brophy, showed us what good teammates are made of, as they both competed well for the team and themselves, as they work hard day to day to improve. Our newest team member, Freshman Nick Lucak, completed his first high school race, and we look forward to having him with us this season.

Running an exhibition race, with pacesetter, Coach Jack Hautz, Senior Logan Yessayan and Junior Jacob Ruese, ran nice efforts of 11:25 for Logan and 12:41.5 for Jacob.

The team’s next scheduled race is against formidable D1 power Kenston, at Kenston, Sept 12th
