David Hessler is currently Secretary/Treasurer at Community West Foundation and serves on the Executive and Grants Committees. His association with the Foundation dates back to when it was still the Fairview/Lutheran Foundation before it became Community West in 2006. David also served as Board Chair from 2009-2011.
David grew up in central Michigan. His father was a Lutheran pastor, as were many members of his family. He was brought up with the principle that good works and salvation go hand in hand. “That’s what we taught our children,” he says. He attended Valparaiso University in Indiana, studying political science as an undergrad, then to law school, earning a Juris Doctorate in 1968. After graduation, David was invited to practice law with his father-in-law, Martin Wegman, the first judge of Lyndhurst Municipal Court. He accepted, passed the Ohio Bar, and they established the Wegman Hessler law firm.
For over 50 years, David has counseled and guided individuals and companies through complex and often challenging issues involving regulatory matters, succession planning, dispute resolution and the preservation of wealth. Now, as Senior Partner Emeritus at Wegman Hessler, he continues to practice on a limited basis, participates on a number of business boards and devotes much of his time to non-profit organizations dedicated to religious, charitable, educational and medical services. He has also supported his alma mater as a longtime member of Valparaiso’s Board of Directors, as Past Chair, and now he is on the Emeritus Board. David also serves on the Board of Trustees of Cleveland Clinic Foundation.
David and his wife, Martha, reside in Westlake and have 4 adult children and 12 grandchildren.
