Honoring Black History Month, LaShaun Garcia’s fifth-grade students at Avon Heritage Elementary School participated in a Black History Wax Museum project this week. The students researched an African American person (past or present), created an autobiography, wrote about the person’s life story on note cards, created a poster about the person, then transformed themselves into their person by dressing up and acting like them. The classroom was turned into a Wax Museum and each student stood frozen. The teacher and other students walked around the classroom and pushed a button by the famous person who then “came to life” and presented their accomplishments.
Some of the Wax Museum autobiographies included Barack Obama, Muhammad Ali, Michael Jordan, Mae Jemison, Harriet Tubman, Rosa Parks, and William Burghardt.
