The Westlake City School District will utilize assistance through the Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief Fund (ESSER) to implement the newly released Extended Learning Plan. Westlake’s ELP will use the summer months to close academic and social-emotional gaps students might currently be experiencing. This funding will also help upgrade facilities, upgrade technology and provide social and emotional supports for students. Continuing into the school year, LEAP (Learning Enrichment Achievement Program), will continue the course of meeting students’ needs to reach their fullest potential.
Funded by the ESSER grants, Paul Wilson will leave his current position as Westlake High School Principal to oversee the grant and lead the transition and enrichment programs established in the ELP and LEAP initiatives. Wilson said his goal continues to be as approachable in his new position as he has been in his 15 years as an administrator within the district. “My time with Westlake brought me so much enjoyment, and I’m honored to be able to continue helping the students, staff and families in this new position,” he said. “Education is evolving as we speak, and Westlake continues to be a leader in ushering in a new academic landscape.”
Robert Woods will take the baton from Mr. Wilson to become Principal at Westlake High School. “I’m looking forward to getting to know the students, staff, parents and community members, and continue to foster and lead the cutting-edge programs that make Westlake High School a top school,” Woods said.
DJ Shaw, current assistant principal at Midview High School, has accepted the same position at Westlake. Shaw said he was attracted to Westlake’s commitment to excellence and is looking to help make each student’s time in high school as memorable as possible. “I want to be a positive role model who strives to make each student’s high school experience both successful and fulfilling,” he said. “High school is an exciting four years for so many reasons and if we can help make those four years great for every student and to give them the tools they need to succeed in future endeavors, then it’s as equally fulfilling to us as educators.”
“These new administrators will guide Westlake as we grow from the experiences of this year,” said Westlake Superintendent Dr. Scott Goggin. “Mr. Wilson will be a prudent steward of our ESSER funding to bring new opportunities to our students. Mr. Woods and Mr. Shaw will join Mrs. Joy Morgan as a power team of leadership for Westlake High School. Our adaptability as a district during these unimaginable circumstances has proven our strength, and we will use this to grow the academic and social emotional health of our students.
