A wonderful highlight of 2022 was the installation of the courtyard garden at Avon East Elementary School.
Throughout the year, students, community members, school maintenance personnel and parents joined together to clean up and provide the space with beautiful plants (butterfly garden), a vegetable garden, herb garden and bird sanctuary.
The school garden offers opportunities for students to integrate every discipline of learning, including science, math, reading, nutrition, and health. Young people can experience a deeper understanding of natural systems and become better stewards of the Earth by designing, cultivating and harvesting school gardens with their own hands. This is also an opportunity to provide fresh vegetables to families in the community.
In December, the garden provided a fun place for their Winter Fest. It included the AMS Choir, Olaf, Hot Cocoa, Games, Crafts and a Photo Booth.
The courtyard garden oasis has provided an important learning tool for everyone involved.
