Staff at UH St John Medical Center Rally to Support Colorectal Cancer Awareness

On Friday, March 10, the staff at University Hospitals St John Medical Center gathered together in celebration of Colorectal Cancer Awareness month – wearing blue shirts to spread awareness. This was in conjunction with screenings offered on Saturdays in March to employees. Screenings were very popular, and appointments filled up quickly.

Awareness and screening opportunities were championed by Dr. Sapna Thomas, UH St John Medical Gastroenterologist. “Colon cancer is one of few cancers that is preventable and curable if detected early enough,” said Dr. Thomas. “This is why it is so important to get screened and seek evaluation if you experience any symptoms.”

It is recommended that all adults at average risk begin screening for colorectal cancer at age 45. This is regardless of personal or family history. Those at higher risk may need to start screening earlier. This includes people with:

  • Family history of colorectal cancer or certain types of polyps
  • Personal history of colorectal cancer or certain types of polyps
  • Personal history of inflammatory bowel disease

If you are in need of screening, you can contact the UH Digestive Health Institute at 216-844-ENDO (3636), or talk to your primary care physician.
