Avon on the Lake Garden Club Tree Dedication

Garden club members with city employees, members of the tree commission and Mayor Mark Spaetzel

On Monday, September 23rd, the members of the Avon on the Lake Garden Club got together at Miller Road Park in Avon Lake to dedicate three trees to the city.

The Avon-on-the-Lake Garden Club has a long tradition of planting trees in the parks and school yards in Avon Lake. In 1932, the club planted a Washington Bicentennial Elm tree in the school yard of the current Avon Lake High School.

The club has continued the tradition of planting trees in school yards and civic parks throughout the past 92 years. This year the club planted one White Swamp Oak (Quercus bicolor) which is a native tree and will grow to a height of over 100 feet. It will also provide food and a habitat for small mammals and birds. Two Chestnut Oaks (Quercus prinus), also native trees, were also planted. They will provide food for animals and pollen for insects.

The goal of the Avon-on-the-Lake Garden Club is to increase the tree canopy in the city with trees that will benefit the environment and be strong enough to live for many decades to come.
