“Guys & Dolls” Promises to Be a Fun Wager of Music, Dance & Technology at Westlake High School
In the musical Guys and Dolls, the timeless battle of the sexes takes center stage, weaving a tale where love triumphs over pride, stubbornness, and societal expectations. Amid the gritty backdrop of New York’s underworld, the sharp-witted gambler Sky Masterson and the principled Salvation Army worker Sarah Brown engage in a spirited clash of hearts and wills. Meanwhile, Miss Adelaide and Nathan Detroit add their own layer to this romantic tapestry—Adelaide, with her unwavering love and comedic frustration, patiently endures Nathan’s commitment fears as he schemes to keep his beloved floating craps game alive. As both couples navigate misunderstandings and personal convictions, the musical beautifully illustrates how love, with its power to soften the hardest of hearts, ultimately conquers all—bridging divides and transforming lives in the most unexpected ways.
“Guys & Dolls!” will be performed by Westlake High School Demon Drama Club. General Seating/Tickets are $10 (cash/check to WHS Drama Club only) and are available at the door. Performance dates/times are April 3-5 @ 7pm | April 6 @ 2pm.
The musical features more than 100 students from a wide range of clubs and activities. In addition to the Drama Club and choirs that typically compose the cast and crew, Westlake High School’s production also taps into the instrumental department for the orchestra, and the TechMates who are helping to design portions of the set.
As well as having 100+ students involved, the musical has also double cast all 8 lead/supporting lead roles, with each cast performing two shows. Seniors Sophia Porachan, juniors Sophia Daniel, Sebastian Kim, and sophomore Will McLoney will lead the cast for the April 3rd & 5th performances. Seniors Bernadette Slattery, Ameer Shouman, Martin Bala and junior Laya Macias, will lead the cast for the April 4th & 6th performances.
“It’s incredible to watch this diverse group of students come together to bring a musical to life. The arts have a special way of uniting people, and I’m so grateful to be a part of that process.” said Jennifer Yachanin-Butler, Director.

Show Synopsis: There’s trouble in River City! When smooth-talking con man Harold Hill arrives in a small, tight-knit town in Iowa, he expects to dupe its residents with his elaborate moneymaking scheme: Despite his complete lack of musical literacy, he will convince everyone that he is a brilliant bandleader and recruit all the boys in town to form a band, pocketing the cash for instruments and uniforms. The problem? Some of the town members, especially the stern librarian, Marian Paroo, don’t quite buy Harold’s story. As Harold struggles to keep his scheme afloat, he also finds himself increasingly attached to the townspeople, who have all experienced a positive change since Harold came to town. Complicating matters even more, Harold is also falling head-over-heels for the beautiful Marian. As All-American as apple pie and as charming as can be, The Music Man is a crowd-pleasing show for the whole family!

Show Synopsis: Based on the beloved animated movie from 20th Century Fox, Anastasia is both a heartwarming and heart-wrenching dive into one of history’s biggest unanswered questions: what happened to Grand Duchess Anastasia Romanov? Set amidst the turmoil of the Russian revolution with the Bolshevik regime on the rise, Anya, an amnesiac orphan stranded in what was once the Russian capital, St. Petersburg, is on a quest to rediscover her past which she believes lies in Paris. Joined by a dashing conman, Dmitry, and an ex-aristocrat, Vlad Popov, who want to use Anya to bamboozle the only remaining Romanov, Dowager Empress Marie into believing that Anya is the lost Anastasia, she escapes to Paris with a determined Soviet officer on their heels. Including classic songs from the motion picture like “Journey to the Past” and “Once Upon a December”, Anastasia explores one determined girl’s journey to find home, love, and family as she discovers who she was and embraces who she is meant to be.
