Community West Foundation is proud to announce Smart Development as the 2025 recipient of the David and Martha Hessler Illuminating Hope Award.
Smart Development is a nonprofit organization dedicated to uplifting individuals in need, particularly those from newcomer and refugee communities. Their services include providing safe housing, social services, and guidance to navigate life in a new country. Through their compassionate work, they are lighting the path to hope, opportunity, and a fresh start for many families across our region.
The announcement was shared via email and social media on Thursday, July 24th at noon, along with a video that captures the heart of Smart Development’s mission and impact. The video features the personal story of a newcomer client, interviews with dedicated staff members, and scenes from their distribution warehouse. This powerful glimpse into how Smart Development creates a sense of belonging and stability for those they serve showcases service in action.
The Illuminating Hope Award includes a $10,000 unrestricted grant and a replica of the Homeless Jesus statue by Canadian artist Timothy Schmalz, whose Matthew 25 Collection is installed throughout Cleveland by Community West Foundation. The award was created to honor a local nonprofit with a long-standing commitment to the community and a mission that truly embodies the spirit of Illuminating Hope.
Named after long-time Community West supporters and philanthropists David and Martha Hessler, this award continues their legacy of compassion and service by celebrating organizations that offer dignity, healing, and hope to those who need it most.
